Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the Italian economy. The Great Financial Crisis of 2007-2008 and the Sovereign Debt Crisis brought on credit crunch and flight-to-quality phenomena, which caused a standstill for SMEs investments and innovation. In this scenario, the Italian Government introduced a new debt security - the minibond - to provide SMEs with an alternative channel to bank credit. The objective of this research is to contribute to the limited literature on the topic of minibonds, trying to prove if there is any statistically significant difference in the capital expenditures entailed by different forms of fundraising: minibonds and bank loans. To achieve this result, two samples of comparable Italian companies concerning size, risk, and growth potential have been created: the treated group, composed of companies issuing a minibond, and the control group, constituted by firms getting a bank loan. The use of the Propensity Score Matching has succeeded in minimizing systematic biases related to self-selection for the creation of the control group. Afterwards, the Difference in Differences multivariate regression allowed for estimating the differential effect of minibonds and bank loans on companies’ capital expenditures. From the results, it arises that the choice between these two financial instruments does not significantly impact the two groups’ investment levels. Rather, the firm’s size and capital structure have been identified as the significant drivers of the econometric model, contrary to short-term liquidity.
