By 2030, approximately one third of the French population will be over 60 years old and the life expectancy at age 80 is expected to be about nine years. With the increase in life expectancy due to medical advances, nursing homes must be prepared to accommodate approximately 3 million baby boomers in the next seven years (Insee). The rise of this older "baby boom" generation, driven by values of freedom, autonomy and consumption, is challenging the over-normalized model of long-term care facilities (called Ehpad in French). Another big challenge awaits them: this generation is connected. There is still a worldwide stereotype that elderlies don’t know how to use digital technologies. This phenomenon, called digital ageism, results in a lack of quantitative data on the elderlies digital habits. Consequently, the Ehpad ecosystem is lagging behind and the majority of them are still poorly digitized. On the other hand, the lack of systemic understanding as well as the weak presence of user-centered and usage-based approaches don’t embrace the whole potential of the digital technologies in this context. This thesis research explores how digital technologies have impacted this under-represented generation of seniors and their experience of the world and how the design and its methodologies could successfully accompany sustainable digital transformations of nursing homes. We will first discuss the characteristics of digital technologies that could be interesting to consider in order to meet the challenges of the Ehpad ecosystem while meeting the expectations of their future inhabitants as well as the strategic intuition that a digital transformation focused on community building and participation could address the future demographic and socio-economic challenges. Then, I will expose the methodology proposed by the association Novum Novem specialized in “Design and aging well” in which this project is developed and the firsts research and mediation tools developed in this context for the 2022 Design Week in France. Resulting from the encounter between design and cultural mediation, this methodology proposal underlines the potential of iterative and experimental field-based approaches to support the transformation of the Ehpad habitat through a holistic cultural transformation concerning digital technologies and elderlies.

Abstract
Resulting from the encounter between design and cultural mediation, this methodology proposal underlines the potential of iterative and experimental field-based approaches to support the transformation of the Ehpad habitat through a holistic cultural transformation concerning digital technologies and elderlies.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
