Low- noise ultrafast ytterbium-based mode-locked lasers strongly impacted the scientific world since their first implementations at the end of the last century, and nowadays their role remains central in several research fields. This doctoral dissertation presents two relevant scientific applications of this technology. The first one is the implementation of a high-power laser system for X-ray generation via Inverse Compton Scattering in the framework of the R&D of project BriXSinO. We built a complex high-average power system exploiting a combination of active and passive amplification of ultrashort near-infrared pulses. Namely, Yb-doped fiber amplifiers allow reaching approximately 60W of power for the infrared laser beam, which is successively coupled to a passive enhancement resonator, where the interaction with relative electrons is supposed to occur. This last element boosts the power of factor 103, exceeding tens of kW of trapped power. The second application of ultrashort pulses from Yb mode-locked lasers is the synthesis of near-infrared frequency combs, which find application mainly in the high-precision spectroscopy field. Specifically, we firstly report on the synthesis of a Yb:CALGO frequency comb operating at a repetition rate of 160 MHz. Then, we present the first implementation of a low repetition rate comb operating at below the MHz, as a proof of concept for an innovative high-harmonics generation strategy for fundamental spectroscopy on He+ ions.

Abstract
Then, we present the first implementation of a low repetition rate comb operating at below the MHz, as a proof of concept for an innovative high-harmonics generation strategy for fundamental spectroscopy on He+ ions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
