Abstract
In the incoming decades, the employment of CubeSats in low-cost deep-space exploration missions will be significant, in conjunction with their employment in mission of increasing complexity. Therefore, it is necessary to design autonomous systems that can robustly operate in different mission scenarios and phases without ground support. Within the framework of vision-based navigation during interplanetary self-driven cruise, the thesis work prosecutes the improvement of a pipeline to autonomously extract the Line-Of-Sight of planets with a specific focus on Processor-In-the-Loop simulation on limited-resources hardware. A cascade of four segments has been identified as the essential structure of the pipeline: Image Processing for the extraction of the celestial objects centroids, Star Identification, Attitude Determination, and Line-Of-Sight Extraction. Consequently, a trade-off analysis has been realized to select the best combination of algorithms, and improvements to the baseline formulations allow their applicability to the deep-space scenario considered and increase computational efficiency. Finally, the pipeline is compiled and tested on a microprocessor of a single-board computer that emulates the constrained processing unit of a miniaturized spacecraft to evaluate the robustness, accuracy, computational time, and memory consumption. Moreover, both synthetically generated images and real camera in the loop have been exploited to assess the algorithm performances.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
