Retroscena : laboratori Innocenti Teatro alla Scala

Retroscena is a project was born from the desire to confront the theme of disused industrial architecture of the Ex Innocenti factory, active in Milan between 1933 and 1993, recognized to produce the tube-joint system, Lambretta scooters, Innocenti-Leyland automobiles, rollers and rolling mills for the metal industry. The spaces of the former factory are located on the edge of the city, within the municipality of Lambrate. Territorial Government Plan identifies the entire disused area as a GFU (Great Urban Functions) settlement area. In October 2021, the Municipality of Milan published the competition announcement "Magnifica Fabbrica" (Magnificent Factory) with the aim of designing a new cultural, artistic, and productive complex in an area currently free of buildings, for the location of the new laboratories and warehouses of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The theatre expressed the need to have a single complex for the laboratories, rehearsal rooms and warehouses, currently located in different points of the city, in order to optimize the methods of storage, handling and transport of the stage sets, placing all the phases of the creative process, from design to production, in continuity, offering citizens the possibility of observing all the activities of the backstage. The thesis work is based on a critical reading of the competition indications regarding the location of the new spaces. By guaranteeing the quantities and arrangement of the spaces required by the competition, the design of the workshops is envisaged within the site of the Ex-Motor Section by means of the conservation, valorization and fruition of the existing structures. In the same location, the theme of production is then reinterpreted from mass production to artistic/theatre production. The challenge is to build a real industrial city, which is not introverted but open to the community, equipped with all the necessary services for users, whether visitors or workers.

Retroscena è un progetto che nasce dalla volontà di confrontarsi con la tematica delle architetture industriali dismesse dello stabilimento Ex Innocenti, attivo a Milano tra il 1933 e 1993, riconosciuto per la produzione del sistema tubo-giunto, scooter Lambretta, automobili Innocenti-Leyland, rulli e laminatoi per l’industria metalmeccanica. Gli spazi dell’ex fabbrica sono collocati a margine della città, compresi entro i territori del municipio di Lambrate. Il Piano di Governo del Territorio identifica l’intero comparto dismesso come ambito di insediamento GFU, Grandi Funzioni Urbane. Il Comune di Milano ha pubblicato, ad ottobre 2021, il bando di concorso “Magnifica Fabbrica” con l’obbiettivo di progettare un nuovo complesso culturale, artistico e produttivo in un’area attualmente libera da costruzioni, per la localizzazione dei nuovi laboratori e depositi del Teatro alla Scala di Milano. La necessità espressa dal Teatro è avere un complesso unico per i laboratori, le sale prove e i depositi, attualmente dislocati in punti diversi nella città, in modo che siano ottimizzate le modalità di stoccaggio, movimentazione e trasporto delle scenografie, ponendo in continuità tutte le fasi del processo creativo, dalla progettazione alla produzione, offrendo alla cittadinanza la possibilità di osservare tutte le attività del retro-quinta. Il lavoro di tesi si fonda su una lettura critica delle indicazioni di concorso rispetto alla localizzazione dei nuovi spazi. Garantendo le quantità e la sistemazione degli ambienti richiesti dal concorso, si prevede la progettazione dei laboratori all’interno del sito dell’ Ex Sezione Motori mediante conservazione, valorizzazione e fruizione delle strutture esistenti. Nello stesso luogo, il tema della produzione viene allora reinterpretato passando da una produzione in serie a una produzione artistica/teatrale. La sfida è costruire una vera e propria città industriale, che non ha caratteristiche di introversione ma di apertura rispetto alla collettività, dotata di tutti i servizi necessari agli utenti, siano essi visitatori o lavoratori.
