Tracing the place and placelessness of student housing in the university : an exploration into the social function of the university and the value of student housing

The question of student housing falls at the intersection of both, the institution of housing itself as well as the university as an institution of higher education. Therefore, matters affecting both of these inevitably affect student housing. This question forms a critical part of policies that deal with making education affordable, accessible and inclusive, and also the planning of the university itself that enables in spatially materialising the same. This is a larger issue concerning how student housing is placed not only within the context of the university but also within the larger framework of higher education. The university serves a social function through the process of transmitting defined values to its students through the act of education. This relation between the social function of the university and the morals that it tries to instil, manifests or materialises through the many activities that take place spatially in the university. The presence or absence of student housing in the university forms a part of the spatial organisation that determines the nature of these activities—or alternatively, how the university materialises its social function. The demand for the transformation of universities is a demand for the transformation of the lives of the youth in the process of renewal of the universities. It has fundamentally been a demand for a transformation of values—or alternatively, a transformation in the way value is defined. The question of student housing and the university is, thus, a question of the way value of student housing has been defined and realised, and its relation to the university. The thesis intends to question and critically examine the place of student housing in the idea of the university. It evaluates the value of student housing through four case studies, by analyzing the evolution of the university from the lens of planning and policy across different contexts and traditions. The thesis, thus, aims to understand the impact of student housing on the socio-political environment and experiences of the students in the university through an exploration into the social function of the university and the value of student housing.

La questione delle residenze universitarie si colloca all'intersezione tra il sistema abitativo stesso e l'università in quanto istituto di istruzione superiore. Pertanto, le questioni che riguardano entrambi gli aspetti si ripercuotono inevitabilmente sulle residenze universitarie. La questione costituisce una parte critica delle politiche che si occupano di rendere l'istruzione accessibile, economica e inclusiva, nonché della pianificazione spaziale dell'università stessa. Si tratta di una questione più ampia, che riguarda il modo in cui le residenze universitarie si collocano non solo nel contesto dell'università, ma anche in quello più ampio dell'istruzione superiore. L'università svolge una funzione sociale tranite il processo di trasmissione di valori definiti nei suoi studenti che avviene attraverso l'atto educativo. Questa relazione tra la funzione sociale dell'università e la morale che cerca di inculcare si manifesta o si materializza attraverso le numerose attività che si svolgono nello spazio universitario. La presenza o l'assenza di residenze universitarie fa parte dell'organizzazione spaziale che determina la natura di queste attività o, in alternativa, il modo in cui l'università materializza la sua funzione sociale. Gli auspici relativi alla trasformazione delle università sono auspici relativi alla trasformazione della vita dei giovani nel quadro del processo di rinnovamento delle università. Si tratta fondamentalmente di una richiesta di trasformazione dei valori o, in alternativa, di una trasformazione del modo in cui il valore viene definito. La questione delle residenze per studenti e dell'università è quindi una questione che riguarda il modo in cui il valore delle residenze universitarie è stato definito e realizzato, e la sua relazione con l'università. La tesi intende mettere in discussione ed esaminare criticamente il posto che le residenze universitarie rivestono nell'idea di università. La tesi approfondisce il valore delle residenze universitarie analizzando quattro casi, analizzando l'evoluzione dell'università dalla lente della pianificazione e della politica in diversi contesti e tradizioni. La tesi mira quindi a comprendere l'impatto delle residenze universitarie sull'ambiente socio-politico e sulle esperienze degli studenti nell'università, realizzando così un'esplorazione della funzione sociale dell'università e del valore delle residenze universitarie.
