The project revolves around the idea of creating a multi-functional theatre, which is a communal space interwoven into the urban fabric of the renaissance city of Sabbioneta and establishes the connection to the important monuments, streets, and natural context of the city. Today this fortified city though perfectly preserved went through a transformation, due to the change in function and urban growth. The project which is an extension to the final workshop, intends to address these issues at more deeper level while considering history planning as an important aspect of the process. The two principal criteria of this project are the analytical approach and the design approach. The thesis analysis the history, the urban morphology of the city, the theatre typology, and the role of contemporary theatre in the historical urban context. The design part of the project is housed on the site of the demolished fortified wall of Sabbioneta, situated between Baluardo San Nicola and Baluardo San Giovanni. Though demolition of walls in 1921, blurred the boundaries between the outside and inside of the walled city and failed to establish the connection of the new settlements with the city center and the architecture around it. The project situated on the edge of the old city, called for urban revitalization, a project which not only makes a physical connection but also a visual connection between the two. Considering the context the theatre was proposed as a multi-functional space, which blurs the boundaries, and interjects a recreational place for the citizens, while still providing a performance space for more formal functions. The theatre here is an important insertion in the city fabric which provides the platform for the spectators to watch the surrounding, transforming the city into “Scaenae”.

Abstract
The theatre here is an important insertion in the city fabric which provides the platform for the spectators to watch the surrounding, transforming the city into “Scaenae”.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
