This thesis consists of seven chapters. In the first chapter, we introduced the Paris Agreement and explained why it acts as a key driver for the energy transition. In the second chapter, we explained the reasons that according to the literature make the current stock price of oil companies overvalued. In the third chapter, we explained the concept of the carbon budget and why it is a problem for oil companies. This leads us to the fourth chapter in which we explicated how stranded assets will cause a reduction in future cash flow. In the fifth chapter, we analyzed the key financial data and ESG metrics for the world’s major oil companies. To do so, firstly we needed to reclassify and analyze the past ten years of financial statements of all the majors. Then, we selected different key financial indicators to demonstrate that the oil sector is an industry in decline. Thus, we performed an ESG analysis to make evident that European majors are better positioned toward the energy transition when compared to their US peers. To do so, we looked both at the Annual Report and the Sustainability Report of the majors. At the end of the chapter, we also detailed the companies’ responses to the Russia-Ukraine war in terms of capital allocation. In the sixth chapter, we analyzed through different valuation methodologies (DCF under two scenarios: BAU and ET, DDM, Relative Valuation, BCRV Tool) ExxonMobil and Eni. In the last chapter, we provided different available alternatives to oil and through an Annual Report and a news-run analysis, we summarized the main ongoing green projects for ExxonMobil and Eni. The key finding is that European companies are less exposed to the risk of stranded assets than U.S. companies and this is reflected into their stock price even when different valuation methodologies are applied. This result is also consistent with the literature and experts’ research. The aim of the thesis is to make investors aware of the potential risk embedded into the stock price of oil majors. Lastly, the thesis also provides insights for activist investors keen to learn more about the key financial and non-financial differences between European and US oil companies.
