PoroCity, a residence complex design in Chicago

PoroCity is an experimental project design based on a develepment proposal in Chicago aiming to establish "porosity" for post-pandemic urban life in the 21st century, when the necessity for vibrant activities and services within the limits of the residential building itself is not just a luxury anymore but a necessity. It is well known that Chicago represents "the epitome of the city of Modernity, where infrastructural, engineering, planning, architectural, and technological innovations coalesced to outline an urban culture and lanscape that speak of the aspirations and ambitions, as well as achievements and failures, of our modern times"1. The 2.8-hectare site is part of a group of abandoned industrial areas situated on the edge of South Loop, along the Southern Branch of the Chicago River, which have been earmarked for redevelopment. A city as the pioneer for modernity is faced with the challenges of transformation to a new era, the post-pandemic times, which is the reason for the site choice. Therefore, a mixed-use housing complex has been proposed to accommodate the burgeoning urban population of downtown Chicago of high diversity with high living quality and to revitalize the surrounding built environment and waterfront areas. To integrate the city, river, and new urban flows, as well as meet the growing requirements for movement and connectivity between public and private spaces in post-covid era, porosity should be established to work as a solution because of the potential of porous mult--functional space for social and spatial interpenetration and flexibility. Porosity is developed at urban scale, as well as in horizontal and vertical directions through three main elements: the northern highrise tower, the southern building with step-down terraces, and the platform. The platform hosts most of the public functions and transforms itself into a bridge connecting the other side of Chicago River. The cantilevered part ensures the accessibility on the ground floor towards the riverfront to create the urban porosity. Meanwhile, the two volumes for residence provides horizontal and vertical porosity with with newly proposed "shared ownership spaces."

PoroCity è un progetto sperimentale basato su una proposta di sviluppo a Chicago che mira a stabilire la "porosità" per la vita urbana post-pandemia nel 21° secolo, quando la necessità di attività e servizi vibranti entro i limiti dell'edificio residenziale stesso non è solo un lusso più che una necessità.
