The aim of the thesis is to identify a correct engineering approach that provides appropriate guidelines useful for robustness design of a multi-storey post-and-beam timber buildings. In this regard, the application of a new simplified tying force method is proposed, which analyses the adequate resistance and ductility of the structure following the loss of a vertical load-bearing element via horizontal tying. The work focuses on the application of the method, recently proposed in the literature, to a real post-and-beam timber building, simulating scenarios of the removal of an internal and edge load-bearing column. Different types of beam-column connections are proposed, applicable during the design and retrofitting of the building, that satisfy the robustness requirements imposed by the tying method and can therefore prevent the progressive collapse of the structure. Finally, a parametric analysis evaluating the variation of the tying force as a function of the chord rotation capacity and different span lengths is reported. The results obtained show that the tying force method represents a promising strategy for designing the robustness of post-and-beam timber buildings falling in low and medium consequence classes.

Abstract
The results obtained show that the tying force method represents a promising strategy for designing the robustness of post-and-beam timber buildings falling in low and medium consequence classes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
