Over the past 50 years, urban neighborhoods have undergone dramatic changes. In urban life, there is a growing proportion of different temporary spaces that serve different purposes. Construction and development of unused urban spaces gradually require new and precise functional requirements. Based on the MIND district in Milan as the design site, this thesis investigates the role of meanwhile spaces as triggers for creating communities, as proposed by the H2020 project called T-Factor - co-creating cities with temporary urbanism. The thesis starts with exploring the concept of "meanwhile spaces and uses" in Europe to exploit free, abandoned or unused spaces before they are permanently used for other purposes. The open space of Milan's Mind district square will be used to plant a seed of inspiration for a temporary exhibition hall. In consideration of the focus of the MIND district on life sciences, the link between meanwhile spaces and life science is explored to identify art as the medium through which life science can be conveyed to the broader community of the area. The final design outcome is a temporary exhibition space for Bioart. Three Bioart works will be displayed: paintings, photographs, and installations. Additionally, people are guided to create their work. From a design point of view, the Pavillion is shaped as a seed, and it is inspired by the concept of sowing, as artworks aim to do with life science contents in the mind of visitors. Also, it is entirely built with natural or recyclable materials, and the structure is designed to be easily assembled and disassembled as temporary solutions require. Thanks to this pavilion, people living and working around MIND will be able to get in contact with knowledge produced in the innovation district, thus contributing to the regeneration of the area and reinforcing the role of meanwhile spaces as transformation agents for the city.
Negli ultimi 50 anni, i quartieri urbani hanno subito cambiamenti radicali. Nella vita urbana cresce la proporzione di spazi temporanei diversi che servono a scopi diversi. La costruzione e lo sviluppo di spazi urbani inutilizzati richiedono gradualmente nuovi e chiari requisiti funzionali. Basandosi sul quartiere MIND di Milano come luogo di progettazione, questa tesi indaga il ruolo degli spazi temporanei come fattori scatenanti per la creazione di comunità, come proposto dal progetto H2020 chiamato T-Factor - co-creare città con l'urbanistica temporanea. La tesi inizia con un'esplorazione del concetto di "meanwhile spaces and uses" in Europa, come strategia per sfruttare spazi liberi, abbandonati o inutilizzati prima che vengano definitivamente utilizzati per altri scopi. Lo spazio aperto della piazza del quartiere Mind di Milano sarà utilizzato per piantare un seme di ispirazione per una sala espositiva temporanea. In considerazione dell'attenzione del distretto MIND per le scienze della vita, viene esplorato il legame tra gli spazi e le scienze della vita, per poi individuare nell'arte il mezzo attraverso il quale le scienze della vita possono essere trasmesse alla comunità più ampia dell'area. Il risultato finale del progetto è uno spazio espositivo temporaneo per la Bioart. Saranno esposte tre opere di Bioart: dipinti, fotografie e installazioni. Inoltre, le persone sono guidate a creare le loro opere. . Dal punto di vista del design, il padiglione ha la forma di un seme ed è ispirato al concetto di semina, come le opere d'arte mirano a fare con i contenuti delle scienze della vita nella mente dei visitatori. Inoltre, è interamente costruito con materiali naturali o riciclabili e la struttura è progettata per essere facilmente assemblata e smontata in base a soluzioni temporanee. Grazie a questo padiglione, le persone che vivono e lavorano nei dintorni di MIND avranno la possibilità di entrare in contatto con la conoscenza prodotta nel distretto dell'innovazione, contribuendo così alla rigenerazione dell'area e al rafforzamento del ruolo degli spazi intermedi come agenti di trasformazione della città.
