This degree thesis deals with the topic of school design and its main purpose is the definition of an alternative approach in the project design of school buildings. In the research, through the “in-between-space” and thanks to its continuity, is suggested a model centred on the learning needs of young students, which refuses the rigid “lecture-based” structure of previous school building promoted by industrial society. The thesis is divided in three mainly parts and is preceded by a discussion about the general condition of youth psychological distress. The first theorical part aims for the definition of the concept of “in-between-space”, compared to the traditional classroom, explaining its origins and its characteristics. The second part analyses the relation among the “in-between-space” and the typology in the school buildings, distinguishing five main possibilities. In the third part, after a general overview of the context, is developed the project proposal for the new secondary school of the school-district of Lugano Centro. Eventually, the research is closed with an atlas of thirty-three school since the second half of XX century, each of which capable of ensuring an effective learning environment for young students.
L’elaborato affronta il tema del progetto della scuola con l’obbiettivo di indagare e discutere un approccio alternativo nella definizione dell’edificio scolastico: attraverso lo “spazio-di-mezzo”, e grazie alla sua continuità, si propone un modello di scuola incentrato sulle esigenze formative dei giovani, “un’architettura educatrice” che rifiuta la rigida struttura trasmissiva promossa dalla società industriale. La ricerca, il cui presupposto di partenza è una riflessione su problematiche giovanili contingenti, è strutturata in tre momenti. Il momento uno è la prima fase di ricerca teorica finalizzata alla definizione del concetto di “spazio-di-mezzo”, rispetto al luogo dell’aula, comprendendone origine e caratteristiche. Il momento due è la successiva fase di analisi dove viene approfondito il rapporto tra “spazio-di-mezzo” e “tipo”, distinguendo cinque casistiche. Il momento tre è la fase applicativa dove, dopo aver introdotto il contesto di rifermento, si sviluppa la proposta progettuale per la scuola media del comparto di Lugano Centro. Infine, la ricerca è conclusa da un atlante di scuole dalla seconda metà del XX secolo meritevoli di aver privilegiato la dimensione “educativa” dello spazio scolastico.
