Visual jockeying (VJing) has become an indispensable 21st-century artistic expression, manifesting itself through live mixing and manipulation of visuals in tandem with the music. While electronic music has laid itself as the foundation for visual performance, underground nightclubs have been home for VJs, stimulating their creative spirit. This thesis explores VJ practice within the context of underground electronic music clubs. Based on the exploratory research approach, it investigates VJs’ processes and experiences at an individual level. Primary qualitative data was collected through field studies and semi-structured interviews conducted with 5 visual jockeys from Italy. Examining the data according to the principles of thematic analysis, 6 main themes were identified: routes to VJing, context, hardware & software, towards performance, performance & visual approach, and finance. The comprehensive analysis of the results sheds light on various facades of the practice previously unexplored, establishing the groundwork for prospective research. According to the outcomes, a number of opportunities for possible future work are presented.
Il Visual Jockeying (VJing) è diventato un’espressione artistica indispensabile del 21° secolo, manifestandosi attraverso live mixing e la manipolazione delle immagini in conformità del flusso musicale. Mentre la musica elettronica si è posta come base per le performance visive, i nightclub underground sono stati la casa dei VJ, stimolando lo spirito creativo. Questa tesi esplora la pratica del VJ nel contesto dei club di musica elettronica underground. Basato sull’approccio della ricerca esplorativa, indaga i processi e le esperienze dei VJ a livello individuale. I dati qualitativi primari sono stati raccolti attraverso studi sul campo e interviste semi-strutturate condotte con 5 visual jockey in Italia. Esaminando i dati secondo i principi dell’analisi tematica, sono stati individuati 6 temi principali: percorsi verso il VJing, contesto, hardware & software, performance, performance & approccio visivo, finanza. L’analisi completa dei risultati porta alla luce varie sfaccettature della pratica precedentemente inesplorate, stabilendo le basi per la ricerca prospettica. In base ai risultati, vengono presentate una serie di opportunità per possibili lavori futuri.
