Time and Space: a programmed extension is a thesis that explores the interpretations and the connections between time and space which are in continuous relation with light. The research will investigate the way a building relates to its surroundings and the way light can be used to create atmospheres and convey meanings. The starting point is the analysis of the ‘Casa del Fascio’ in Como and its characteristics through which certain themes such as forms and spaces, light and time, simultaneity and multiplicity, perspectives and relationships will be examined by describing the insights and interpretations of different personalities related to the world of art and architecture. From these observations emerges that human beings are the protagonists of the space that surrounds them and they interact with it through their senses and movements. The temporal dimension that can be emphasized via the manipulation of light and the use of sensitive materials is fundamental to these perceptive processes. From this takes shape the project that intends to upgrade the urban space between the city's most important monuments the Casa del Fascio, the Cathedral and the Theater, with the aim of unifying and enhancing the area. The design language derived from specific methodologies inspired by Mondrian's figurative imagery, specifically his Diamond paintings. Through these transformations the new system expands itself throughout the space defining the arrangement of the various urban elements. Special attention is paid to the choice of materials which are innovative and sustainable. All design choices derive from the ideas and intentions that Terragni implemented so as to evoke their memory in a contemporary key. "the arrangement of an Italian city is equivalent to the expert work of a good surgeon. One must take pride in a glorious heritage without renouncing to liven’s own life. In the field of art one must create "a new besides the ancient one" not a heritage that stands on the ruins of the ancient."(Terragni, 1940)
