Abstract
The socio-political context in which many states with a strong democratic history find themselves is clouded by a widespread post-democratic condition, in which a weariness towards the obligations of political citizenship and a complacent certainty that democracy is in safe hands prevail. As some of the once-guaranteed certainties have disappeared in recent decades, many have clung to nostalgia and resentment, which have been echoed by the alt-right and nostalgic pessimism, leading to a perennial search for scapegoats to blame for the changed economic and social conditions. However, there is no shortage of alternative thinking: alongside xenophobic groups, ecologist and feminist organisations have gained prominence, attempting to disrupt the post-democratic order. In this turbulent context, a key role is played by the media, which must be able to provide valuable tools for orientation in the political and social complexities. While the mass media are going through a phase of crisis, the social independent magazines provide glimpses of possibility, with their peculiar way of informing and creating culture by trying to overcome unsatisfactory narratives and shedding new light on significant issues. This gave rise to a research project aimed at exploring the ways in which these magazines do political activism, starting with an observation of the socio-political situation and the movements that are making their voices heard, with the intention of finding intersections between them and the responses provided by indie magazines. As this is not a new type of mobilisation, examples of 20th-century publishers who did political activism in relation to certain historical conditions were analysed. Within the vast current independent landscape, four categories were identified, defined by as many types of approaches to political activism. For each of them, an emblematic magazine was analysed in detail, identifying strengths and critical points. By interweaving the concepts that emerged in the various chapters, an attempt was finally made to suggest useful project hints for future publishing experiences.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
