Memory and territory are constantly in dialogue in a two-way relationship where one cannot exist without the other. The following thesis analyses when both these aspects bond even deeper: the moment a territory, a place where memories are built and stored, is hit by a natural catastrophe. The traumatic events determine long series of painful moments that the survivors face through memory by remembering things as they were before and what they have become. Recalling the event and giving it a personal meaning therefore becomes a way to heal wounds and allow people to overcome the initial shock. The aim is to lead the witnesses of the catastrophic event towards a re-examination of their experience, asking them to retrace their memories. This path starts from the deep bond with the places they are most connected to: their homes. Thus, was born the memorial of houses, a digital memorial which, by focusing attention on such an intimate and private place, asks the survivors to tell their experience in relation to the catastrophe, but more specifically, to remembering the feeling of loss and abandonment suffered towards their homes. It was therefore decided to choose the earthquake in L'Aquila, which occurred on April 6, 2009, as a case study on which the project will be based on. In fact, the community of L'Aquila has shown itself to be mature enough to face this memory effort, since the time passed has allowed the inhabitants to acquire awareness. The communication system designed, therefore, is built starting from transcript testimonies and the testimonies personal photographs, reflecting their personal life and domestic spaces. The union of these two elements forms the videotext. In this frame the individual and domestic memories are outlined and in the greater concept of the memorial aspire to become collective memories capable of providing a truer and more authentic representation of the catastrophe. Houses and therefore homes, need to be communicated as fundamental elements of the urban environment, which have been lost, damaged, or destroyed forever due to the earthquake. The memorial of the houses aims to make us reflect on the importance of these places and the close bond they establish with people, to demonstrate how memory can be teaching, for those who have not experienced the catastrophe, and therapeutic, for those who have lived with it for a long time.

Abstract
The memorial of the houses aims to make us reflect on the importance of these places and the close bond they establish with people, to demonstrate how memory can be teaching, for those who have not experienced the catastrophe, and therapeutic, for those who have lived with it for a long time.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
