Ivrea, the city of Olivetti’s glory past, is in the search of a new identity. The creation of the new Cultural Pole of the city was the topic of the study of the Groma Group of Alta Scuola Politecnica 17th Cycle with multiple levels of innovative approaches to the culture in the complex historically important context as such. This thesis is a continuation of the Groma processes with the objective of design verification of the guidelines proposed in the previous study. They refer to the competition brief creation where the program of the new Cultural Center and the Open Deposit were defined. Two design interventions are taking place in the different parts of the city, separated both physically by the Dora river and built in the different historical periods. The area on the left, recognized by Unesco as an Industrial city of 20th century site, offers the possibilities to reuse to host part of the cultural program inside. On the other side, historical city center with its complexity due to the topographical characteristics, presence of the archeological findings, position next to the main square of the city and the demolishing upcoming project offers a possibility of creation of the new place for the community. Design solutions are driven by the need to respect the built heritage that the new structures are connected to and the need of the new landmarks on both sides of the city. The aim of the Cultural center is to bridge the old arms of the convent with the newly built structure to get the unique experience of the different programs of the museum and the library extended by the new places for the community. Open deposit with its convenient existing structural system, is remaining as a frame in which the new box structures are inserted, the opaque ones which are serving to store the different materials of the museum, library or archive pieces, and the transparent one which will be the showcase, while its verticality will serve for creating the new landmark of the area, and the new view point to the city. These two positioned like that in the city, are presenting the new cultural layer of the city, and inviting the visitors to explore the rich heritage of the past but also draw the new identity of the future of the city, by the cultural exchange and the dialogues which are gonna take place in the new building structures, but also extend out to the public spaces.
Ivrea, la città del passato glorioso dell’Olivetti, è alla ricerca di una nuova identità. La creazione del nuovo Polo Culturale della città è stata oggetto di studio del Gruppo Groma dell’Alta Scuola Politecnica 17° Ciclo con molteplici livelli di approcci innovativi alla cultura nel complesso contesto storicamente rilevante in quanto tale. Questa tesi è una continuazione dei processi Groma con l’obiettivo di verifica progettuale delle linee guida proposte nel precedente studio. Si riferiscono alla creazione del bando di concorso in cui sono stati definiti il programma del nuovo Centro Culturale e del Deposito Aperto. Due interventi progettuali sono in atto nelle diverse parti della città, separate sia fisicamente dal fiume Dora che realizzate nelle diverse epoche storiche. L’area a sinistra, riconosciuta dall’Unesco come sito di Città Industriale del XX secolo, offre la possibilità di essere riutilizzata per ospitare al suo interno parte del programma culturale. D’altra parte, il centro storico della città con la sua complessità dovuta alle caratteristiche topografiche, alla presenza dei reperti archeologici, alla posizione vicino alla piazza principale della città e all’imminente progetto di demolizione offre una possibilità di creazione del nuovo luogo per la comunità. Le soluzioni progettuali sono guidate dalla necessità di rispettare il patrimonio costruito a cui le nuove strutture sono collegate e la necessità dei nuovi punti di riferimento su entrambi i lati della città. L’obiettivo del Centro culturale è quello di collegare le vecchie braccia del convento con la struttura di nuova costruzione per ottenere l’esperienza unica dei diversi programmi del museo e della biblioteca ampliati dai nuovi luoghi per la comunità. Il deposito aperto, con il suo comodo sistema strutturale esistente, rimane come una cornice in cui si inseriscono le nuove strutture scatolari, quelle opache che servono a conservare i diversi materiali dei pezzi museali, librari o archivistici, e quella trasparente che sarà la vetrina, mentre la sua verticalità servirà a creare il nuovo landmark dell’area, e il nuovo belvedere sulla città. Questi due posizionati così nella città, presentano il nuovo strato culturale della città e invitano i visitatori a esplorare il ricco patrimonio del passato ma anche a disegnare la nuova identità del futuro della città, attraverso lo scambio culturale e il dialoghi che avranno luogo nelle nuove strutture edilizie, ma si estenderanno anche agli spazi pubblici.
