GUASTALLA. THE CONTINUITY OF A HISTORY

Guastalla has been an ideal city, and is now a palimpsest of events and decisions that have stratified its places in history. This essay attempts to find a compromise between the complex historical palimpsest of a structurally multiform city and the search for new spaces that restore life and quality to places in need of mending. The Ducal Palace lot was an ordered and geometric organism, a sequence of spaces that began in the main square and ended at the eastern end of the lot. As a reminder of the original condition of the organism of the Doge's Palace and its gardens, there remain fragments of a masonry that formed an arm adjacent to the Palace. It is the fragments, the ruins, the forgetfulness that are the starting points for the mending of a no longer place. The tools used for research for a project are many. Fundamental are historical and critical research on the events in Guastalla, the numerous site visits, travel notes on perceptions, photographs to study the figurative characters, and very important are the chats with those who Guastalla passes through it and live it every day. The research was similar to an investigation, and the solution attempts to mend the historical fabric and bring interrupted places back to life.

Guastalla è stata una città ideale ed è oggi un palinsesto di eventi e decisioni che hanno stratificato i suoi luoghi nella storia. Questo saggio cerca di trovare un compromesso tra il complesso palinsesto storico di una città strutturalmente multiforme e la ricerca di nuovi spazi che restituiscano vita e qualità a luoghi che hanno bisogno di essere riparati. Il lotto di Palazzo Ducale era un organismo ordinato e geometrico, una sequenza di spazi che iniziava nella Piazza del Mercato e terminava all'estremità orientale del lotto. A ricordare la condizione originaria dell'organismo di Palazzo Ducale e dei suoi giardini, rimangono i frammenti di una muratura che formava un braccio adiacente al Palazzo. In questo caso specifico, sono proprio i frammenti, le rovine ad essere i punti di partenza per la ricucitura di un luogo che non c'è più. Fondamentali sono le ricerche storico-critiche sugli eventi di Guastalla, i numerosi sopralluoghi, gli appunti di viaggio sulle percezioni, le fotografie per studiare i caratteri figurativi. La ricerca è quindi stata simile a un'indagine, la cui soluzione tenta di ricucire il tessuto storico e riportare alla vita i suoi luoghi interrotti.
