The reuse of Porta Torre in Como: a vertical itinerary through the drawings of Giuseppe Terragni

One of the main themes affecting contemporary architecture is that of reuse. Generally, architectural projects relate to the pre-existing whether it is a project to reuse the existing or simply within any historical context. With the reuse project, however, we are in close contact with the existing by working within it but still respecting its structure and initial conditions. Bringing back into the memory of citizens the fragments that have been forgotten and abandoned over time is an arduous but decisive task for contemporary architects living in historic cities that abound with punctual elements totally neglected by citizens. The objective of the research of the following paper is to find a new function to revive a building that is fundamental to the history of the city of Como: Porta Torre. I chose to work on this building because it would give me the opportunity to confront some issues that I believe are fundamental for a modern-day architect such as respecting the pre-existence and working vertically operating mainly in height. The building is currently in need of reuse as it is gradually disappearing from the city's memory and citizens and visitors are beginning to give it little importance that does not do justice to Porta Torre's historical past. Through an initial analysis of the Como area and its defensive walls, it was possible for me to identify the project area with precision knowing its structure and composition. After this first phase, placing myself in the point of view of the need of the citizens of Como, the intervention inside Porta Torre was carried out, which includes an internal staircase housing an exhibition concerning the drawings of a fundamental figure for the city of Como and its architectural evolution: Giuseppe Terragni. The project concludes with the realization of extrusions on the arched openings of the tower and the use of the top as a rooftop in order to be totally linked to the Como area. The possibility of vertical design intervention was a challenge that allowed me to work on such a contemporary theme as the tower typology. At the same time it allowed me to confront a historical pre-existence to be respected and enhanced in order to reconstruct its memory that is slowly fading with the passage of time.

Uno dei temi principali che riguarda l’architettura contemporanea è quello del riuso. Generalmente i progetti di architettura si relazionano con le preesistenze sia che si tratti di un progetto di riutilizzo dell’esistente, sia che si tratti di un semplice progetto all’interno di un qualsiasi contesto storico. Con il progetto di riuso ci troviamo però a stretto contatto con l’esistente lavorandoci all’interno ma pur sempre rispettandone la struttura e le condizioni iniziali. Riportare nella memoria dei cittadini i frammenti che nel corso del tempo sono stati dimenticati e abbandonati è un compito arduo ma decisivo per gli architetti contemporanei che vivono in città storiche che abbondano di elementi puntuali totalmente trascurati dai cittadini. Obiettivo della ricerca del seguente elaborato è quello di trovare una nuova funzione per ridare vita ad un edificio fondamentale per la storia della città di Como: Porta Torre. Ho scelto di lavorare su questo edificio perché mi avrebbe dato la possibilità di confrontarmi con alcuni temi a mio avviso fondamentali per un architetto dei nostri giorni quali il rispetto della preesistenza e il lavoro in verticale operando principalmente in altezza. L’edificio attualmente ha bisogno di un intervento di riuso poiché sta gradualmente scomparendo dalla memoria della città e cittadini e visitatori iniziano a conferirne una poca importanza che non rende giustizia al passato storico di Porta Torre. Attraverso una prima analisi del territorio comasco e delle sue mura difensive mi è stato possibile individuare l’area di progetto con precisione conoscendone struttura e composizione. Dopo questa prima fase, ponendomi nel punto di vista della necessità dei cittadini comaschi, è stato realizzato l’intervento all’interno di Porta Torre che prevede una scala interna che accoglie una mostra riguardante i disegni di una figura fondamentale per la città di Como: Giuseppe Terragni. La possibilità di intervento progettuale in verticale è stata una sfida che mi ha permesso di lavorare su un tema contemporaneo come quello della tipologia a torre. Allo stesso tempo mi ha permesso di confrontarmi con una preesistenza storica da rispettare e valorizzare per ricostruirne la memoria che sta piano piano svanendo con il passare del tempo.
