Ex|in-clusive cities: the challenge of building spaces for multicultural interaction explores the social issue of immigration as an urban phenomenon, as it involves the public space of the contemporary city. The latter, in fact, plays a fundamental role in the integration of the new inhabitants in the social tissue. However, even if the cities of today host multicultural populations urban public environments lack an identitarian component for the migrant community. Therefore, the role of outdoor spaces (the context where multicultural encounters can happen) in the process of social inclusion are researched, by the analysis of a multidisciplinary literature and by focusing on a local case study: Piacenza, characterized by the highest incidence of foreign residents in the entire national territory. The thesis suggests that public spaces should be designed to promote intercultural encounters and social inclusion through interactions. It also proposes a framework for urban design that considers the heterogeneous needs of the local population, -particularly those of the migrant community- and proposes tools and strategies to overcome the obstacles usually encountered in designing a space that contains the plurality of society. This framework can be used, therefore, to create outdoor spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also foster interculturalism, mutual understanding, place attachment, sense of belonging and sense of community.

Abstract
This framework can be used, therefore, to create outdoor spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also foster interculturalism, mutual understanding, place attachment, sense of belonging and sense of community.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
