Digital innovation in home care: insights from the startup global landscape

The healthcare sector has undergone a paradigm shift due to recent and more than ever dynamic technological breakthroughs. This shift towards digital modality enables the healthcare system to lighten its load and reduce hospitalization rates while also leveraging new potentials. Considering the structural trend of ageing population, which raises the number of frail and chronically ill people requiring care, together with the recent disruption brought by Covid-19, the global healthcare system’s intention is to promote home care through the diffusion of smart homes and assistive technologies. Indeed, the objective of the present research is to study the state of the art of digital solutions dedicated to the care and support of patients and citizens in the home setting. To identify the most recent innovations, a census of startups was conducted as they are a good indicator of the latest trends in the market. The startups were classified according to the functionality they offer, the target audience they address, and the technologies they use, and analyses were conducted combining the different dimensions. The results showed a tendency to target citizens more than the elderly and patients, thus favoring functionalities that deal with lifestyle improvement rather than care. Looking at investments, however, a propensity to support the other two targets as well emerged, with increasingly smart devices that will be able not only to monitor the user but to provide a response with actions and feedback, improving care management for society as a whole. Given the dynamic nature of the context and the continuous evolution in technology, it is suggested to repeat this study in the years to come to identify developments that will revolutionize the way healthcare support is delivered.

I recenti e sempre più dinamici sviluppi in ambito tecnologico hanno portato anche il settore sanitario ad un cambio di paradigma, muovendosi verso una modalità sempre più digitale che permette di alleggerire il carico del sistema sanitario e ridurre i tassi di ospedalizzazione ma anche di sfruttare nuove potenzialità. Considerando il trend strutturale dell'invecchiamento della popolazione, che aumenta il numero di persone fragili e di malati cronici che necessitano di assistenza, insieme alla recente disruption portata dalla pandemia di Covid-19, l'intenzione del sistema sanitario globale è quella di promuovere l'assistenza domiciliare attraverso la diffusione delle smart home e delle tecnologie assistive. L’obiettivo della presente ricerca è infatti studiare lo stato dell’arte delle soluzioni digitali dedicate alla cura e al supporto di pazienti e cittadini in contesto domiciliare. Per individuare le innovazioni più recenti è stato condotto un censimento delle startup in quanto rappresentano un buon indicatore dei trend più recenti nel mercato. Le startup individuate sono state classificate in base alle funzionalità offerte, il target a cui si rivolgono e le tecnologie che utilizzano, e sono state condotte molteplici analisi combinando le diverse dimensioni. Dai risultati è emersa una tendenza a rivolgersi maggiormente ai cittadini piuttosto che ad anziani e pazienti, favorendo quindi le funzionalità che si occupano del miglioramento dello stile di vita piuttosto che della cura. Guardando agli investimenti però si può dedurre una propensione al supportare anche gli altri due target, con dispositivi sempre più intelligenti che saranno in grado non solo di monitorare l’utilizzatore, ma di fornire una risposta con azioni e feedback, migliorando la gestione della cura per l’intera società. Data la dinamicità del contesto studiato e la continua evoluzione in ambito tecnologico è suggeribile ripetere questo studio negli anni a venire per individuare gli sviluppi che rivoluzioneranno la modalità di erogazione del supporto sanitario.
