This master thesis describes the experimental analysis carried out on two distinct single-cylinder spark-ignition engines. Both engines feature port fuel injection of gaseous hydrogen. The numerical simulations have been performed using GASDYN, a software developed by the Internal Combustion Engine Group at the Department of Energy Engineering of Politecnico di Milano. The research conducted in this study represents a contribution towards verifying the ability of the software to accurately describe the behaviour of hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines. Recently, a significant enhancement has been introduced for the evaluation of the laminar flame speed, which is a crucial parameter to accurately describe the combustion process of hydrogen-air mixtures. In particular, the validity range of the Tabulated Kinetic approach used for its estimation has been expanded. This allows for a reliable description of operating conditions characterized by extremely lean mixtures. The accuracy of the simulations has been extensively tested by comparing the computed values with experimental data from both single-cylinder engines. The results obtained show a satisfying agreement between the two sets of data, indicating that the simulations are reliable and accurate. The relevance of this study lies within a bigger framework characterized by the urgent priority to achieve the decarbonisation goals in the transport sector. The results indicate that hydrogen has the potential to be a worthy alternative fuel, without requiring massive changes in an already vastly used technology.

Abstract
The results indicate that hydrogen has the potential to be a worthy alternative fuel, without requiring massive changes in an already vastly used technology.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
