Enrico (Richino) Castiglioni was an architect, painter, sculptor and engineer. Born in Busto Arsizio on January 29, 1914, he died in the same city on November 6, 2000. His work, mainly dated to the second half of the 1900s, is unfortunately scarcely known today, despite the fact that in the past it enjoyed great consideration especially by foreign critics: in 1979, as part of the exhibition 28/78 Architecture, fifty years of Italian architecture from 1928 to 1978, promoted by «Domus» and by the municipality of Milan, Castiglioni was recognized among the seven main protagonists of the architectural scene in post-war Italy. The thesis aims to contribute to the rediscovery and enhancement of the figure of the architect through the study of one of the main themes of his research, the design of structures with a strong plastic value, often sculptural, capable of characterizing the spatiality with their presence of the buildings of which they are an integral part. In Castiglioni’s projects, the structural component, together with a skilful use of light, becomes the means by which to express the theoretical system he developed as a professional and, before that, as a professor at the Milan Polytechnic and at the Catholic University. Particular emphasis is given to the shell structures whose innovativeness is highlighted both from a constructive and compositional point of view.
