Extractive activities are a reality that has existed for thousands of years, from the time man first started as a builder and architect. The need to extract raw materials has, over the centuries, increased exponentially, making it inevitable that more and more quarries were opened in our territories. At the end of their exploitation, the quarries are dismissed, generating new abandoned, unsafe and sometimes degraded spaces. Nowadays, in a context that is increasingly aware of ecological and sustainable development issues, the theme of quarries is also becoming central to territorial and landscape planning; the quarries present on our territory today are numerous and thus become an important theme, as they are elements with a strong visual, ecological and environmental impact. The majority of regeneration projects, however, almost always involve the simple renaturalisation of the area, leading to the loss of productive and historical memory. What we want to investigate, with this thesis, is therefore the possibility and need to develop different approaches to these spaces, which are able to relate with the surrounding context, generating new strengths, opportunities for development and potential, transforming the problem of an empty space to be restored into a new virtuous possibility for the territory and its inhabitants. In particular, the project will focus on the Ustiano and Albarola quarries, two mining areas near the town of Ponte dell'Olio, in the province of Piacenza; the recovery interventions have been specifically chosen for each site, planning the creation of a photovoltaic park (Ustiano) and a space for events and concerts (Albarola). The recovery of these quarries, therefore, is developed through a design that is sensitive to the specificities of the place, integrating the different aspects that regulate the territory, the stratigraphy and morphology of the landscape in which they are located, and the social relations of those who live in there; what we think we are achieving are new quality spaces, new characterising elements in the territory, within a landscape that regains its dignity and continuity.

Abstract
The recovery of these quarries, therefore, is developed through a design that is sensitive to the specificities of the place, integrating the different aspects that regulate the territory, the stratigraphy and morphology of the landscape in which they are located, and the social relations of those who live in there; what we think we are achieving are new quality spaces, new characterising elements in the territory, within a landscape that regains its dignity and continuity.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
