NFTs for cultural purposes

This research is essential for anyone interested in the NFT phenomenon, particularly those who wish to use NFTs for artistic or other creative purposes, and those who are concerned about their ethical and cultural implications. The thesis investigates the NFT phenomenon through design research methods, examining its impact on human culture and our lives. NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, are mainly recognized as digital assets that use blockchain technology to verify ownership and authenticity. They have gained immense popularity in recent years, particularly in the art world, where they have been involved in creating huge art commerce. To understand the NFT phenomenon, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, including desk research and field research. Desk research involves a thorough review of existing literature, online resources, and other secondary sources to gather information about NFTs, their technology, and their impact. The research is guided by the questions of What, How, and Why. It begins by defining the boundaries of the NFT phenomenon, explaining what NFTs are, how they are created, and how they work. It also explores the technology behind NFTs, including blockchain technology, smart contracts, DAOs, and DACs. It also investigates the different types of NFTs, their use cases, and the emerging trends in the NFT ecosystem. Then, the research will focus on the NFT application in the art world, exposing its ethical implications, particularly in terms of ownership, authenticity, security, environmental and cultural sustainability. Field research, on the other hand, involves digital ethnography, interviews, and surveys with NFT users to gain insights into their motivations and personal experiences. Field research will also include parallel research on traditional art enthusiasts who are not NFT users, to investigate both sides of the art community and discover their expectations, behaviors, and attitudes toward NFTs. The research will also distinguish all the actions involving NFTs now available, from the user’s point of view (enjoy, share, trade, buy…) After having defined the boundaries of the NFT phenomenon and explored its opportunities and constraints, the research proposes a design concept that translates the insights collected during the entire process into a simple and effective solution. The design concept takes into account the needs and expectations of NFT creators and collectors as well as the values of the art community. It aims to enhance the user experience of NFTs, simplify their use, and promote their ethical and cultural use in the art world and beyond.

Questa ricerca è essenziale per chiunque sia interessato al fenomeno NFT, in particolare coloro che desiderano utilizzare gli NFT per scopi artistici o scopi creativi e per coloro che sono interessati alle loro implicazioni etiche e culturali. La tesi indaga il fenomeno NFT attraverso metodi di ricerca progettuale, esaminando il loro impatto sulla cultura umana e sulle nostre vite. Gli NFT, o Token non fungibili, sono principalmente riconosciuti come risorse digitali che utilizzano la tecnologia blockchain per verificare la proprietà e l'autenticità. Hanno guadagnato un'immensa popolarità negli ultimi anni, in particolare nel mondo dell'arte, dove sono stati coinvolti nella creazione di un enorme commercio d'arte. Per comprendere il fenomeno NFT, questa ricerca utilizza diversi metodi, tra cui desk research e ricerca sul campo. La desk research comporta una revisione approfondita della letteratura esistente, delle risorse online e di altre fonti secondarie per raccogliere informazioni sugli NFT, sulla loro tecnologia e sul loro impatto. La ricerca è guidata dalle domande di cosa, come e perché. La ricerca definirà i confini del fenomeno NFT, spiegando cosa sono gli NFT, come vengono creati e come funzionano. Esplorerà anche la tecnologia alla base degli NFT, inclusa la tecnologia blockchain, gli smart contracts, le DAO e le DAC. Esamina inoltre i diversi tipi di NFT, i loro casi d'uso e le tendenze emergenti nell'ecosistema NFT. Successivamente, la ricerca si concentrerà sull'applicazione degli NFT nel mondo dell'arte, esponendone le implicazioni etiche in termini di proprietà, autenticità, sicurezza, sostenibilità ambientale e culturale. La ricerca sul campo, d'altra parte, prevede fasi di etnografia digitale, interviste e sondaggi con gli utenti NFT per ottenere informazioni sulle loro motivazioni ed esperienze personali. La ricerca sul campo includerà anche una ricerca parallela sugli appassionati di arte tradizionale che non sono utenti NFT, per indagare su entrambi i lati della comunità artistica e scoprire le loro aspettative, comportamenti e atteggiamenti nei confronti degli NFT. La ricerca distinguerà anche tutte le azioni disponibili che coinvolgono gli NFT, dal punto di vista dell'utente (divertirsi, condividere, scambiare, acquistare...) Dopo aver definito i confini del fenomeno NFT ed esplorato le sue opportunità e i suoi vincoli, la ricerca propone un concept progettuale che traduce le informazioni raccolte durante l'intero processo in una soluzione semplice ed efficace. Il concetto di design tiene conto delle esigenze e delle aspettative dei creatori e dei collezionisti di NFT, nonché dei valori della comunità artistica. Il concept mira a migliorare l'esperienza dell'utente degli NFT, semplificarne l'uso e promuoverne l'uso etico e culturale nel mondo dell'arte.
