habsburg forts of verona : valorisation towards a new polycentric urbanity

The present research work wants to presentify, literally “make present”, a series of historical artifacts of Verona (Italy) that have been forgotten by the city debate for many years. These are the forts of the Habsburg era. The thesis work aims to divide into two main intents. The first intent is to tell the story of these war artifacts as a reflection of their memory, which is of vital importance in recognizing their historical and cultural value. To achieve this, the thesis will first provide a general history of Verona from a military perspective, focusing on the fortification events throughout different eras. This will reveal the richness of Verona as an event-city. The architectural type of the Habsburg era forts will then be analysed, including a comparison with other forts outside the city but of the same period. These two premises are intended to provide a preliminary overview and a deeper understanding of the period in question. Then it will be investigated the different vicissitudes of a specific fort, fort Sofia, which will serve as an “excellent example”. The thesis will attempt to reconstruct the physical changes and transformations that the fort has undergone over time, and understand the stratifications that have occurred. Finally, the thesis will present what fort Sofia is today throughout specific surveys, to understand who interacts with these spaces and how. With this information, as the second intent of the thesis is to propose a meta-project to enhance the system of Veronese fortifications, a conceptual mechanism of considerations designed to point out that they can become valid actors in the contemporary life of the city. To achieve these objectives, the thesis will underline how it is possible to implement an improvement of existing systems and will propose dialogues between these resources and some systems outside Verona.

Il presente lavoro di ricerca vuole presentificare, letteralmente “rendere presenti”, una serie di manufatti storici di Verona (Italia) che sono stati dimenticati dal dibattito cittadino per molti anni. Si tratta dei forti dell’era asburgica. Il lavoro di tesi si vuole dividere in due intenti principali. Il primo intento è quello di raccontare la storia di questi manufatti bellici come riflesso della loro memoria, che è di vitale importanza per riconoscere il loro valore storico e culturale. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, la tesi fornirà prima una storia generale di Verona dal punto di vista militare, concentrandosi sugli eventi di fortificazione attraverso diverse epoche. Ciò svelerà la ricchezza e l’unicità dell’evento-città Verona. Verrà quindi analizzato il tipo architettonico dei forti dell’era asburgica, incluse comparazioni con altri forti al di fuori della città ma dello stesso periodo. Questi due presupposti sono intesi per fornire una panoramica preliminare e una comprensione più profonda del periodo in questione. Successivamente verranno indagate le diverse vicissitudini di forte nello specifico, forte Sofia, che servirà come “esempio eccellente”. La tesi cercherà di ricostruire i cambiamenti fisici e le trasformazioni che la fortificazione ha subìto nel corso del tempo e di comprendere le stratificazioni storiche che si sono verificate. Infine, la tesi presenterà ciò che forte Sofia è oggi attraverso analisi specifiche, per comprendere chi interagisce con questi spazi e come. Con queste informazioni, come secondo intento della tesi verrà proposto un meta-progetto per valorizzare il sistema delle fortificazioni veronesi, un meccanismo concettuale di considerazioni atte a far presente che possono diventare degli attori validi nella vita contemporanea della città. Per raggiungere questi obiettivi, la tesi sottolineerà come è possibile attuare un miglioramento dei sistemi esistenti e proporrà dialoghi tra queste risorse e alcuni sistemi al di fuori di Verona.
