Purpose - The purpose of this research is to develop a better understanding of the barriers in implementing Digital transformation (DT) and identify key success factors to overcome these barriers with the integration of lean principles and practices. Design/methodology/approach - This study adopts a two-stage approach. Stage 1 is devoted to a literature review and stage 2 is based on a single case study on a company belonging to the trade sector which had implemented DT not long ago. It aims to identify the relationship between the DT success factors and the lean practices (LP). Findings – The research identified several barriers to DT and the underlying factors that hinder the implementation of digital technologies along with success factors to overcome these barriers involving lean principles and practices. The findings indicate that lean practices have a positive effect on the successful Digital Transformation providing clear evidence to the practitioners. The research also revealed that the firm should focus on improving their lean culture in order to have better transformation projects in the future. Practical implications – The results contribute to the emerging field of DT considering only one organization in the Trade sector to encounter the barriers and develop a supportive organizational culture to overcome these barriers. Implications comprise of awareness and knowledge of the barriers that are faced by the organization during these types of transformations and how the lean practice helps to successfully implement the digital technologies into the organization. This research aids in identifying and analyzing lean implications in an organization when implementing Digital Transformation. Research limitation – The qualitative nature of our analysis, industry specific and the geographic location of our sample hinder the generalizability of our finding. Originality/value – Despite the criticality of addressing the DT barriers by employing lean, such an aspect has been under-researched. Hence, this research would investigate whether the lean practices improve the operational performance of the companies effectively during their digital transformation phase. Scopo - L'obiettivo di questa ricerca è sviluppare una migliore comprensione delle barriere nell'implementazione della trasformazione digitale (DT) e identificare i fattori chiave di successo per superare queste barriere con l'integrazione di principi e pratiche lean. Progettazione/metodologia/approccio - Questo studio adotta un approccio in due fasi. La fase 1 è dedicata a una revisione della letteratura e la fase 2 si basa su un singolo caso di studio su un'azienda del settore commerciale che ha implementato il DT poco tempo fa. L'obiettivo è identificare la relazione tra i fattori di successo del DT e le pratiche snelle (LP). Risultati - La ricerca ha identificato diverse barriere al DT e i fattori sottostanti che ostacolano l'implementazione delle tecnologie digitali insieme ai fattori di successo per superare queste barriere che coinvolgono i principi e le pratiche lean. I risultati indicano che le pratiche lean hanno un effetto positivo sul successo della trasformazione digitale, fornendo una chiara evidenza ai professionisti. La ricerca ha anche rivelato che le aziende dovrebbero concentrarsi sul miglioramento della loro cultura lean per avere progetti di trasformazione migliori in futuro. Implicazioni pratiche - I risultati contribuiscono al campo emergente della DT considerando una sola organizzazione del settore del commercio che ha incontrato le barriere e ha sviluppato una cultura organizzativa di supporto per superare queste barriere. Le implicazioni comprendono la consapevolezza e la conoscenza delle barriere che vengono affrontate dall'organizzazione durante questo tipo di trasformazioni e di come la pratica lean aiuti a implementare con successo le tecnologie digitali nell'organizzazione. Questa ricerca aiuta a identificare e analizzare le implicazioni del lean in un'organizzazione quando si implementa la trasformazione digitale. Limiti della ricerca - La natura qualitativa della nostra analisi, la specificità del settore e l'ubicazione geografica del nostro campione ostacolano la generalizzabilità dei nostri risultati. Originalità/valore - Nonostante la criticità di affrontare le barriere della trasformazione digitale utilizzando il lean, questo aspetto è stato poco studiato. Pertanto, questa ricerca intende indagare se le pratiche lean migliorano efficacemente le prestazioni operative delle aziende durante la fase di trasformazione digitale.
