Living in the post-Soviet modernism. Towards a conservation plan for a modernist residential building in Tashkent The present thesis and research project will contribute to the studies regarding the preservation and management of 20th-century architecture, specifically the program “Towards a conservation management plan for the seismic modernism of Tashkent”: an ongoing international research project with the aim of protecting and enhancing the modernist architectural heritage of Tashkent, the capital of present-day Uzbekistan. The research thesis, in particular, focuses on the modernist building Zhemchug “The Pearl”, designed by architects O. Aidinova, G. Golubeva, E. Shatalov, and A. Shamuzafarov between 1972 and 1976, and completed in 1985. Originally conceived by architect O. Aydinova as a “Vertical Mahalla” an example of great architectural interest due to its unique design, innovative structural concept, and social intentions that the project aims for. Indeed, the architectural peculiarities and social ideals theorized by architect O. Aydinova led the experimental 16-story Zhemchug “The Pearl” building to be immediately recognized as a one-of-a-kind architecture by architects of the USSR and, even prior to its completion, to be awarded as the best building in USSR by the Association of Architects of URSS. Currently, the building is protected and listed among the protected buildings of Uzbekistan following the decision of the Council of Ministers no. 846 of October 4, 2019. Therefore, the present research project aims to pursue an in-depth studying and understanding aimed at the preservation, safeguarding and enhancement of the distinctive features and peculiarities of the experimental building Zhemchug “the Pearl”, by theorizing the adoption of a preservation and enhancement strategy that is developed according to a two-fold approach, which response to the intrinsic duality of the building, as well as a conceivable architectural design project for a hypothetical further positive metamorphosis of the building that places the resident community and the signs of its expression at the centre of its attention. The present thesis work lastly relies on being able to provide an authoritative contribution to a finer and more detailed understanding of the 20th-century architecture of Tashkent and in particular, of the modernist building Zhemchug “the Pearl” as it was originally conceived and designed by architect O. Aydinova and as it stands today in its “re-appropriated” appearance, but which still preserves unique community and collectivity values in the residential architecture of Tashkent as well as the international scenario.

Abitare il modernismo post-sovietico. Verso un piano di conservazione per un edificio residenziale modernista a Tashkent. Il presente progetto di tesi e di ricerca contribuirà agli studi sulla conservazione e gestione dell’architettura del XX secolo e, in particolare, al programma “Towards a conservation management plan for the seismic modernism of Tashkent”: una ricerca internazionale in corso, con l’obiettivo di proteggere e valorizzare il patrimonio architettonico modernista di Tashkent, capitale dell’odierno Uzbekistan. La tesi di ricerca si è focalizzata, in dettaglio, nei riguardi dell’edificio modernista sperimentale monolitico in calcestruzzo armato Zhemchug “La Perla”, progettato dagli architetti O. Aidinova, G. Golubeva, E. Shatalov, A. Shamuzafarov tra il 1972 e il 1976, e completato nel 1985. Concepito, inoltre, dall’architetto O. Aydinova in qualità di “Mahalla Verticale” ed esempio di grande interesse architettonico per l‘approccio e carattere fortemente sperimentale riconoscibile nel suo design unico, nella concezione strutturale innovativa ed inoltre, negli intenti sociali a cui il progetto ambisce. Le peculiarità architettoniche e gli ideali sociali teorizzati dall’architetto O. Aydinova, portarono infatti l’edificio sperimentale di 16 piani Zhemchug “la Perla” ad essere immediatamente riconosciuto come un’architettura unica nel suo genere e, conseguentemente, essere premiata - ancora prima del termine della sua costruzione - come miglior edificio dell’URSS dall’Unione degli Architetti dell’URSS. Ad oggi, l’edificio risulta tutelato ed annoverato tra gli edifici protetti dell’Uzbekistan a seguito della decisione del Consiglio dei Ministri n. 846 del 4 ottobre 2019. Pertanto, il presente lavoro di ricerca ambisce al conseguimento dell’obiettivo cardine dello studio, dell’approfondimento e comprensione volti alla conservazione, salvaguardia e valorizzazione dei tratti distintivi e delle peculiarità dell’edificio sperimentale Zhemchug “la Perla”, teorizzando l’adozione di una strategia di conservazione e valorizzazione la quale si è declinata secondo un approccio duale e distinto a risposta della dualità intrinseca dell’edificio, nonché di un’eventuale progetto architettonico al fine di un’ulteriore metamorfosi positiva dell’edificio, il quale pone al centro della sua attenzione la comunità residente ed i segni della sua espressione. Il presente lavoro di tesi confida infine nel poter collocarsi come contributo autorevole ad una migliore e maggiormente dettagliata comprensione dell’architettura del XX secolo di Tashkent ed in particolare, dell’edificio modernista Zhemchug “la Perla” così come fu ideato e concepito in origine dall’architetto O. Aydinova e come ad oggi si presenta nel suo aspetto “re-appropriato”, ma il quale conserva tutt’ora valori di collettività e di comunità unici nello scenario dell’architettura residenziale di Tashkent nonché internazionale.
