Influence of Lean on the Industry 4.0 technologies implementation, pathways and success: an empirical survey study

The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of Industry 4.0/digital technologies as companies have to find new ways to cope with the disruptions in the supply chain, reduced demand and increased pressure. This study aims to provide insights into the influence of Lean environment in the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies and their impact on the competitiveness of companies. Previous studies have shown that there is a positive correlation between Lean and Industry 4.0 technologies and when they are concurrently implemented, it leads to increased operational performance. However, there is no study that is deep enough to understand if Lean environment has direct influence on the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies. A survey was conducted to collect data based on whose results, the study examined the level of adoption of various technologies, their implementation procedure, and the impact that the company's previous level of lean had on the improvement of its overall performance. It also explored the interrelation between the lean practices and the digitalization of the company and how much it is facilitated by lean in the company. Through the use of multiple regression analysis, the study also comprehends the impact of all the factors and their simultaneous interactions on the firm's operational performance. The findings show that the success of industry 4.0 depends more on the way these technologies are implemented than on the degree to which they are adopted.

La pandemia da Covid-19 ha accelerato l'adozione delle tecnologie dell'Industria 4.0/tecnologie digitali, poiché le aziende devono trovare nuovi modi per far fronte alle interruzioni nella catena di approvvigionamento, alla ridotta domanda e alla pressione aumentata. Questo studio mira a fornire approfondimenti sull'influenza dell'ambiente Lean nell'implementazione delle tecnologie dell'Industria 4.0 e sul loro impatto sulla competitività delle aziende. Studi precedenti hanno dimostrato che c'è una correlazione positiva tra Lean e le tecnologie dell'Industria 4.0 e quando vengono implementate contemporaneamente, porta a un aumento delle prestazioni operative. Tuttavia, non c'è uno studio abbastanza approfondito per capire se l'ambiente Lean ha un'influenza diretta sull'adozione delle tecnologie dell'Industria 4.0. È stata condotta una survey per raccogliere dati basati sui cui risultati, lo studio ha esaminato il livello di adozione di varie tecnologie, la loro procedura di implementazione e l'impatto che il precedente livello di lean dell'azienda ha avuto sull'incremento della sua performance complessiva. È stato anche esplorato l'interrelazione tra le pratiche lean e la digitalizzazione dell'azienda e quanto viene facilitato dal lean nell'azienda. Attraverso l'uso di analisi di regressione multipla, lo studio comprende anche l'impatto di tutti i fattori e le loro interazioni simultanee sulle prestazioni operative dell'azienda. I risultati mostrano che il successo dell'Industria 4.0 dipende più dal modo in cui queste tecnologie sono implementate che dal grado di adozione.
