In the City of Milan, next to the external ring road system, is located the Central train Station, a dynamic place, lived and frequented by a considerable variety of actors. During the 20th century, the station has been a point of reference for exchanges, meetings, departures, and arrivals, and with its surrounding area, it became the commercial heart of Milan, thanks to the construction of its service structure, the Magazzini Raccordati. For a long time, they were considered as a unique building with a great historical, architectural, cultural, and economic interest, but today they represent an abandoned and disused resource for the city. These spaces, distributed for over two kilometers along Aporti and Sammartini streets, support the track ballast, which is placed on an elevated level, if compared to the one of the city, creating a breaking point in the urban morphology, which is recomposed only thanks to four vehicular tunnels that run through the warehouses. The thesis goal is the redevelopment and reuse of this complex through a project on different levels, linked by the fil rouge of art. Firstly, there is an attempt to define a relationship, both physical and thematic, with the closest areas of the building, rethinking the urban space in front of the facade and introducing a new elevated pathway that offers different points of view over the city and a new way of use and sociability; secondly, we try to develop a project for the vaulted spaces inside warehouses: ateliers for artists, exhibition spaces and workshop are the main activities that characterize those spaces, thanks to the inclusion of a modular, flexible and reversible system that allows different spatial and functional configurations. The aim of this work is proposing a design solution linked to the context, which act as flywheel where the over 40,000 square meters of unused space, can return to be protagonists in the city of Milan.

Abstract
The aim of this work is proposing a design solution linked to the context, which act as flywheel where the over 40,000 square meters of unused space, can return to be protagonists in the city of Milan.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
