Design as a concept has a long history of addressing society’s challenges. Deep changes are required to address the long-term economic, demographic, social, political, and environmental challenges, which bring new difficulties for businesses, governments, institutions, and people. Social innovation refers to the design and implementation of new solutions that involve conceptual, process, or product change in order to ultimately improve the welfare and wellbeing of people. It focuses on design as a strategic tool for developing social innovation initiatives and creating impact by properly understanding and framing problems and finding solutions in collaboration with communities and societies. Design for Social Innovation sparked my curiosity and drove my desire to practise practical design that makes a difference. Thinking about the area where I wanted to apply design for social good as social intolerance is one of the issues that I personally dealt with both inside and outside my home country; Egypt. Intolerance of race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, age, etc. make our world a less habitual place. Living in various countries gave me the chance to percieve the level of intolerance in my home country; Egypt as it is considered to be one of the highest levels of intolerance. This is due to a variety of factors including, but not limited, to a strong cultural and religious background that has developed over time. Today, Egypt is witnessing a huge development through building new cities in various areas of the country, a new administrative capital, as well as developing several historical neiborhoods in Historic Cairo. This is expected to improve the quality of life and offer better living conditions. However in my opinion, this could never be achieved as long as people’s thinking remains the same. Therefore, using my thesis, I decided to use the opportunity to investigate where I could tackle such issue. The thesis will first investigate social innovation as a design field, then address social intolerance as a global issue. Then,, the thesis will focus on the issue at hand in Egypt by investigating its causes and representations in the Egyptian society. Lastly, the thesis will investigate how a design thinking approach can be used to deal with such complex issue.

Abstract
Design as a concept has a long history of addressing society’s challenges. Deep changes are required to address the long-term economic, demographic, social, political, and environmental challenges, which bring new difficulties for businesses, governments, institutions, and people. Social innovation refers to the design and implementation of new solutions that involve conceptual, process, or product change in order to ultimately improve the welfare and wellbeing of people. It focuses on design as a strategic tool for developing social innovation initiatives and creating impact by properly understanding and framing problems and finding solutions in collaboration with communities and societies.
