Layers of time : addition, transformation and heritage

Materials and technology are the witnesses of the history and changes that made the building 22080 emerge along the years, creating layers of time. This research focus on the preservation and transformation of the site and the building of the Veterinaria Campus. The thesis main theme is the observation of how the building undergoes changes and additions throughout the different architectural periods occurring in Milan. These changes create noticeable layers that will be the subject of research for the development of the new project design. The current state of the building is in a matter of disrepair as it does not meet the functions required for the present campus activities. In order to respect the past, the new volumes seek to create a harmony between the past and the present. The concept is developed by designing 3 different layers of interventions that recognizes the new addition by having different architecture currents, but always finding ways to merge them. The ground floor is designed to be an accessible space that provides a high degree of transparency by linking exterior and interior, together with the new urban design, it generates places of relationships where different users meet to study, work, wait or transit. The ground floor and first floor offer a flexible environment where all forms of learning are held, including workshops, classrooms, reading areas and exhibition spaces. Finally, the renovation of the addition of the second floor marks the noticeable change over time, its function is flexible and adaptable creating an empty space with flexible equipment that can be easily reconfigured, supporting different activities but primarily responding to a zone of tranquility and transparency, having a 360-degree view towards the veterinary faculty complex. This volume emphasizes the compatibility of the old and the new, using transparency and lightness materials and colors on the exterior, while the interior is a reversible execution solution creating a gap with a new steel structure to have the less intervention with the old structure of the historical building.

I materiali e la tecnologia sono i testimoni della storia e dei cambiamenti che hanno fatto emergere l'edificio 22080 nel corso degli anni, creando stratificazioni nel tempo. Questa ricerca si concentra sulla conservazione e la trasformazione del sito e dell'edificio del Campus di Veterinaria. Il tema principale della tesi è l'osservazione di come l'edificio subisca modifiche e aggiunte nel corso dei diversi periodi architettonici che si sono succeduti a Milano. Questi cambiamenti creano stratificazioni evidenti che saranno oggetto di ricerca per lo sviluppo del nuovo design del progetto. Lo stato attuale dell'edificio è di degrado, in quanto non soddisfa le funzioni richieste per le attuali attività del campus. Per rispettare il passato, i nuovi volumi cercano di creare un'armonia tra il passato e il presente. Il concetto si sviluppa progettando 3 diversi livelli di intervento che riconoscono la nuova aggiunta con correnti architettoniche diverse, ma trovando sempre il modo di fonderle. Il piano terra è concepito come uno spazio accessibile che offre un alto grado di trasparenza collegando l'esterno e l'interno e che, insieme al nuovo disegno urbano, genera luoghi di relazione dove i diversi utenti si incontrano per studiare, lavorare, aspettare o transitare. Il piano terra e il primo piano offrono un ambiente flessibile dove si svolgono tutte le forme di apprendimento, tra cui laboratori, aule, un'area di lettura e uno spazio espositivo. Infine, la ristrutturazione dell'aggiunta del secondo piano segna il cambiamento evidente nel tempo, la sua funzione è flessibile e mutevole, creando uno spazio vuoto con attrezzature flessibili che possono essere facilmente riconfigurate, supportando diverse attività ma rispondendo soprattutto a una zona di tranquillità e trasparenza, con una vista a 360 gradi verso la facoltà di veterinaria. Questo volume enfatizza la compatibilità tra il vecchio e il nuovo, utilizzando materiali e colori trasparenti e leggeri all'esterno, mentre l'interno è una soluzione esecutiva reversibile che crea un'intercapedine con una nuova struttura in acciaio per avere un minore intervento con la vecchia struttura dell'edificio storico.
