Blend to standing out : an investigation of the "communal living" role in the Southern Asian young generation life in Milan

The housing crisis in Milan has been exacerbated in recent years, particularly for students from South Asian countries who have become among the prominent new arrivals in this city. Despite this group’s significant population and human capital, research studies have primarily neglected their importance. Previous studies on housing have mainly focused on local students or other immigrant groups, leading to a lack of understanding of the challenges faced by South Asian students. This situation has pushed young people to share their accommodations with others to manage the financial crisis. One of the standard models of shared housing is multicultural communal living. Universities, social housing, and the market are three different providers that offer these structures. This study addresses this knowledge gap by conducting in-depth interviews with South Asian students and analyzing three case studies offered by different housing providers mentioned above. The seeks to understand the cultural backgrounds, current situation and challenges this South Asian students faces, as well as the influential factors that affect their financial and social lives. By combining qualitative and quantitative analyses, the study proposes policy and spatial design suggestions that promote more compatibility and positive interactions among residents from diverse cultural backgrounds. The findings of this study have the potential to contribute to a better understanding of the housing crisis in Milan and inform policy makers and housing providers’ decisions to improve the living conditions of South Asian students coming to Milan.

Questa ricerca esplora la situazione abitativa degli studenti del Sud Asia a Milano, una città che ha subito una grave crisi di alloggio negli ultimi anni. Gli studenti del Sud Asia sono tra i nuovi arrivati più numerosi e qualificati in questa città, ma sono stati poco studiati dalle ricerche. La maggior parte degli studi sull'abitazione si è focalizzata su studenti locali o altri gruppi migranti, ignorando le difficoltà che gli studenti del Sud Asia devono affrontare. Per far fronte alla crisi economica, molti giovani hanno optato per la condivisione dell'alloggio con altri in strutture comunitarie e multiculturali. Queste strutture sono offerte da tre diversi attori: le università, l'edilizia sociale e il mercato privato. Lo scopo di questa ricerca è di colmare le principali lacune di conoscenza attraverso interviste approfondite con gli studenti del Sud Asia e l'analisi di tre casi studio rappresentativi dei diversi fornitori di alloggio. Lo studio cerca di comprendere i contesti culturali, la situazione attuale e le sfide che questi studenti del Sud Asia devono superare, nonché i fattori che influenzano la loro vita finanziaria e sociale. Utilizzando metodi qualitativi e quantitativi, lo studio propone raccomandazioni politiche e spaziali che favoriscono una maggiore compatibilità e interazioni positive tra i residenti provenienti da diversi contesti culturali. I risultati di questo studio possono contribuire a una migliore comprensione della crisi abitativa a Milano e a informare le scelte dei decisori politici e dei fornitori di alloggio per migliorare le condizioni di vita degli studenti del Sud Asia che si trasferiscono a Milano.
