The world we live in is constantly changing, and it is the city, which provides the setting and structure that gives rise to social life, diverse opportunities and innovation. In the contemporary period, we are faced with an exponential increase in the flow of people and goods, the construction and expansion of mobility infrastructures and a greater diffusion of large shopping centres, residential areas and public spaces in peri-urban areas. This phenomenon has led to the development of situations of marginalization and abandonment, in those enclosed and limited areas between these new large settlements, which however often have their own identity and a symbolic value linked to the past. These so-called 'fragile spaces' are the object of study of urban regeneration, a concept that has acquired great importance in the recent period, with a meaning and a value that have progressively evolved from the simple intervention of urban recovery to arrive in the field of valorisation and the safeguarding of the cultural and environmental prerogatives of an entire territory. However, urban regeneration is not just a process of spatial transformation: it is the user, the subject who perceives the spaces, who lives and inhabits them, who determines the transformations and changes in the identity of the place. Based on these premises, we wish to propose a regeneration project for the area of the former Agostino Bassi hospital and for the Nicolò Savarino park in which it is located, starting from key concepts: nature, abandonment and fragility. These paradigms best represent the current state of this area, which nevertheless has great potential. The idea of the project was to bring the park back to what was its function at the beginning of the last century, to its agricultural past, proposing a re-functionalization of the three existing pavilions, with the insertion of a greenhouse, a market and a house farm. Furthermore, urban gardens have been inserted within the park, and the irrigation ditch, which was present at the beginning of the 1900s before the construction of the hospital, has been brought to the surface. The aim is therefore to create an integrated architecture both locally and globally, which fits coherently within these fragile spaces, proposing a new unitary landscape which develops based on the concept of identity of the place, but which also takes into account the link between architecture and space, between the present, past and future, as well as the important relationship between man and the surrounding environment.

Il mondo cui viviamo è in costante mutamento, ed è la città, che fornisce lo scenario e la struttura cha da luogo alla vita in società, alle diverse opportunità e all’innovazione. Nel periodo contemporaneo, ci troviamo dinanzi ad un aumento esponenziale dei flussi di persone e merci, alla costruzione e l'ampliamento delle infrastrutture per la mobilità e ad una maggiore diffusione di grandi centri commerciali, aree residenziali e degli spazi pubblici nelle aree periurbane. Questo fenomeno ha portato allo sviluppo di situazioni di marginalità e abbandono, in quelle aree intercluse e limitate tra questi nuovi grandi insediamenti, che spesso però hanno una propria identità e un valore simbolico legato al passato. Questi cosidetti ‘spazi fragili’ sono oggetto di studio della rigenerazione urbana, concetto che ha acquisito una grande importanza nel periodo recente, con un significato e una valenza che si sono progressivamente evoluti rispetto al semplice intervento di recupero urbanistico per approdare nell’ambito della valorizzazione e della salvaguardia delle prerogative, culturali e ambientali di un intero territorio. Tuttavia, la rigenerazione urbana non è solo un processo di trasformazione spaziale: è l'utente, il soggetto che percepisce gli spazi, che li vive e li abita, a determinare le trasformazioni e i cambiamenti nell'identità del luogo. In base a queste premesse, desideriamo proporre un progetto di rigenerazione per l'area dell'ex ospedale Agostino Bassi e per il parco Nicolò Savarino in cui esso è situato, partendo da concetti chiave: natura, abbandono e fragilità. Questi paradigmi rappresentano al meglio lo stato attuale di quest'area, che possiede però un grande potenziale. L’idea di progetto è stata quella di riportare il parco a quella che era la sua funzione agli inizi del secolo scorso, ovvero al suo passato agricolo, proponendo una rifunzionalizzazione dei tre padiglioni presenti, con l’inserimento di una serra, di un mercato e di una house farm. Inoltre all’interno del parco sono stati inseriti degli orti urbani, ed è stata riportata in superficie la roggia, che era presente agli inizi del ‘900 prima della costruzione dell’ospedale. L'obiettivo è quindi quello di creare un'architettura integrata sia in senso locale che globale, che si innesti in modo coerente all'interno di questi spazi fragili, proponendo un nuovo landscape unitario che si sviluppi basandosi sul concetto di identità del luogo, ma che tenga conto anche del legame tra architettura e spazio, tra presente passato e futuro, nonché dell'importante rapporto tra l'uomo e l'ambiente circostante.
