Oltre il domestico : la trasformazione della casa unifamiliare nella città diffusa

The suburban residential territories, after the widespread urbanization of the Italian region in the second half of the twentieth century, are now waiting for a transformation. Differently from the paradigms of containment and densification proposed by research from the years 2000, the thesis explores the transformative possibilities of diffuse settlements starting from the house on the lot, the dominant housing model. The single-family house is an unsustainable and obsolete heritage if compared to the needs of contemporary living. In the first part, the research investigates the condition of the single-family house in the region between the rivers Adda and Ticino, analyzing its architectural features. The second part describes the crisis affecting this heritage due to demographic changes, the complex family geography, and the magnetism of living in the city that has recently influenced housing choices. At the same time, an exploratory reflection is needed addressing different topics, such as the revolution in the world of work, exacerbated by the recent pandemic, the affordability, and the expulsion from the city: the typology of the house on the lot needs a redesign in its uses and functions. The third part is a design experiment that starts on the scale of the house, then involves settlement and the territory. The thesis explores possible scenarios by building an imaginary project that focuses on the becoming of the house, with incremental logic. The Villoresi Canal is a section along which the project, which can potentially take place anywhere, can take place, through a light infrastructure that connects the territory and enhances a widespread system of living. Adding and subtracting, multiplying functions, breaking down fences, and redefining what is public and private are the tools of creative manipulation of the house. Contemporary themes need a new interpretation as a design opportunity to experience an alternative way of rehabilitating the house in a diffuse city.

I territori residenziali suburbani, eredità del processo di urbanizzazione diffusa del territorio italiano nel secondo Novecento, sono oggi in attesa di trasformazione. Superando i paradigmi di contenimento e densificazione proposti da ricerche degli anni 2000, la tesi esplora le possibilità trasformative degli insediamenti diffusi a partire dalla casa su lotto, modello abitativo dominante. La casa unifamiliare costituisce un patrimonio insostenibile e obsoleto rispetto alle esigenze dell’abitare contemporaneo. Nella prima parte, la ricerca indaga la condizione della casa unifamiliare nella città diffusa tra l’Adda e il Ticino, analizzando i caratteri architettonici e la sua diffusione nel territorio. La seconda parte descrive la crisi che investe questo patrimonio, dovuta ai cambiamenti demografici, alla complessa geografia familiare, al magnetismo che vivere in città ha esercitato in tempi recenti orientando le scelte abitative. Al tempo stesso, la rivoluzione nel mondo del lavoro, esacerbata dalla recente pandemia, i costi della casa, l’espulsione dalla città sono i temi che esortano una riflessione esplorativa che interroga la tipologia della casa su lotto e ne reinterpreta usi e funzioni. La terza parte è il racconto di una sperimentazione progettuale alla scala della casa, dell’insediamento e del territorio. La tesi esplora possibili scenari di trasformazione attraverso la costruzione di un immaginario di progetti che pone al centro il divenire della casa e interessa, con una logica incrementale, gli insediamenti diffusi. Individua nel canale Villoresi una sezione lungo cui il progetto, pur realizzandosi potenzialmente ovunque, può aver luogo, attraverso una infrastrutturazione leggera che connette il territorio e valorizza un sistema diffuso in cui abitare. Aggiungere e sottrarre, moltiplicare le funzioni, abbattere le recinzioni, ridefinire ciò che è pubblico e privato sono gli strumenti di una manipolazione creativa della casa, che interpreta temi attuali come occasione progettuale attraverso cui sperimentare un modo alternativo di riabitare la casa nella città diffusa.
