A longitudinal study of italian Reddit conversations around the russian invasion of Ukraine

Online social networks are nowadays a fundamental place to form discussions, so it becomes relevant to understand how real-world events influence these online interactions. We study how the conversations on two of the most active Italian Reddit communities were impacted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. By leveraging a dataset of over 1 million comments and tens of thousands of posts, we describe a change in the moderators’ behaviour, making them more active and responsive during the first month of the war and how the daily sentiment of the comments in these communities is tied to the prevalence of war-related discussions, which also are more negative and toxic than the non war-related ones. Furthermore, we show the reduction of sentiment-driven homophilic interactions for users that discuss about the war, a phenomenon that subsists instead normally in the communities. Finally we show how the war discussions did not involve a specific demographic group of users. Overall, our findings describe how the Russian invasion of Ukraine influenced negatively the daily conversations on the two analyzed communities, shedding some light on the way these users responded to this world-changing event.

I social network sono oggigiorno un luogo fondamentale per la formazione di discussioni, perciò diventa rilevante capire come gli eventi del mondo reale possano influenzare queste interazioni online. In questo lavoro studiamo come le conversazioni in due delle più attive comunità italiane su Reddit siano state influenzate dall’invasione russa dell’Ucraina. Sfruttando un dataset di oltre 1 milione di commenti e decine di migliaia di post, descriviamo un cambiamento nel comportamento dei moderatori, che diventano più attivi e reattivi durante il primo mese di guerra e come il sentiment giornaliero dei commenti in queste comunità sia legato alla prevalenza di discussioni legate alla guerra, che sono anche più negative e tossiche di quelle che non parlano dell’invasione. Inoltre, mostriamo la riduzione delle interazioni omofile sul sentiment per gli utenti che discutono della guerra, un fenomeno che invece sussiste normalmente in queste due comunità. Infine, mostriamo come le discussioni sulla guerra non coinvolgano uno specifico gruppo demografico di utenti. Nel complesso, i nostri risultati descrivono come l’invasione russa dell’Ucraina abbia influenzato negativamente le conversazioni quotidiane sulle due comunità analizzate, facendo luce sul modo in cui questi utenti hanno risposto a questo evento di portata mondiale.
