This research explores the role of super tall buildings as part of commercial city center master plans, focusing on the comparison between three iconic projects by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM): Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and One World Trade Center in New York. The research aims to answer two main research questions: (1) how do these iconic super tall buildings transform the city image of their respective contexts and contribute to the global contemporary city, in conjunction with the phenomenon of starchitecture? (2) What is the connection-effect relation between these buildings and their contexts, specifically New Pudong, Downtown Dubai, and Ground Zero of Lower Manhattan, and how do they influence the urban commercial district? The theoretical framework establishes the foundation by examining the theories of iconic and super tall buildings in contemporary cities, along with the role of star architecture and spectacular architecture. The methodology employed encompasses an analytical framework that incorporates the study of SOM's approach as a design firm, followed by the analysis of each case study. Through a comprehensive analysis, the research delves into the specific contexts of the case studies, encompassing the development process of the master plans, the distinctive features and branding of each project, the effects of the iconic buildings on the master plans, and their role in shaping the commercial and business functions within the urban context. The subsequent comparison section synthesizes the findings from each case study, facilitating the answering of the research questions and providing a platform for drawing conclusions. The research outcomes shed light on the transformative impact of these super tall buildings on the city image, the reinforcement of global contemporary city characteristics through starchitecture, and the interconnectedness between the iconic buildings and their urban commercial districts. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the understanding of the multifaceted relationship between super tall buildings, commercial city center master plans, and the broader urban context. While offering insights into the specific cases studied, it also acknowledges the limitations faced during the research, such as linguistic barriers and data availability. This study sets the stage for future research, encouraging a more comprehensive exploration of additional case studies and the broader implications of super tall buildings in contemporary urban development.
World Trade Center a New York.

Abstract
This study sets the stage for future research, encouraging a more comprehensive exploration of additional case studies and the broader implications of super tall buildings in contemporary urban development.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
