The Milk Way

The project The Milk Way has the objective of investigating the world of early childhood, the first thousand days of life, the symbiosis between mother and child, the proper nursing and the way in which design can positively influence this delicate phase of human development. On a theoretical level, the research refers to the most recent discoveries in the epigenetic and neuroscientific fields, to Montessori’s pedagogical thinking and to the guidelines traced by the paediatrician Emmi Pikler, who pointed out how postnatal development is influenced by the practice of nursing and the care of the environment in which the baby grows. My project originated from the awareness of the fundamental role played by the senses in establishing the baby’s bond with its mother and the surrounding environment. The interpersonal relations are often mediated by the world of objects and in the relationship between mother and child, this is particularly true. When their exclusive “diade”, becomes a 'triad', that will inevitably include also objects and the designer’s work will begin. My research, started from an overview of the best-selling products for the world of early childhood. It focused on those objects designed for the zero-to-one age: soft supports created to facilitate breastfeeding, sleeping and waking time, and the first baby’s movements. In the development of the concept, the functional, formal, sensory, and relational qualities of the product were explored. The “object/space” is a kit of soft supports, extension of the maternal body, made up of rounded organic shapes, delicate colours, natural materials promoting tactile sensations and favouring adaptability: a carpet, to create a corner all of its own to relate with the people and the things around him; a so called “topponcino”, mattress that give extra comfort during the sleep and when it is held in the arms; a curved tubular pillow suitable for breastfeeding and for the child’s containment inside and outside the cradle; a small bean-shaped pillow, transitional object in the baby’s motor development. The four elements of the set can be arranged in different ways and easily stored all inside the carpet, which becomes a packaging when it is folded and closed like a bag.

Il progetto The Milk Way ha l’obiettivo di indagare il mondo della prima infanzia, dei primi mille giorni di vita, della simbiosi mamma-bambino, del corretto accudimento, e di come il design può condizionare positivamente questa delicata fase dello sviluppo umano. A livello teorico si fa riferimento alle più recenti scoperte in campo epigenetico e neuroscientifico, al pensiero pedagogico montessoriano e alle linee guida tracciate della pediatra Emmi Pikler che hanno evidenziato come lo sviluppo postnatale sia influenzato dalla pratica dell’accudimento e dalla cura dell’ambiente nel quale il bambino cresce. Il mio progetto è nato dalla consapevolezza del ruolo fondamentale che i sensi svolgono nello stabilire il legame del bambino con la madre e con l’ambiente circostante. Le relazioni interpersonali siano spesso mediate dal mondo degli oggetti e nella relazione mamma e bambino, questo è ancor più vero. Quando la loro “diade” esclusiva, diventa una “triade” che includerà inevitabilmente anche gli oggetti, inizierà l’opera del designer. La mia ricerca è iniziata con una rassegna dei prodotti più diffusi per la fascia di età zero-uno anni: supporti morbidi creati per facilitare l’allattamento, il sonno e i momenti di veglia e i primi movimenti del bambino. Nello sviluppo del concept sono state esplorate le qualità funzionali, formali, sensoriali e relazionali del prodotto. L’oggetto-spazio è un kit di supporti morbidi, prolungamento del corpo materno, fatto di forme organiche tondeggianti, colori tenui, materiali naturali che promuovono sensazioni tattili e favoriscono l’adattabilità: un tappeto, per creare un angolo tutto per sé ed entrare in relazione con le persone e le cose che lo circondano; un “topponcino”, materassino che offre un comfort extra durante la nanna, e quando viene preso in braccio; un cuscino tubolare curvo, adatto all’allattamento e al contenimento del bambino fuori e dentro la culla; un cuscinetto a forma di fagiolo, oggetto transizionale nello sviluppo motorio del bimbo. I quattro elementi del set possono essere arrangiati in diversi modi ed essere facilmente riposte tutte nel tappeto che diventa packaging quando viene ripiegato e chiuso come una borsa.
