LiberaMente : spazi inediti oltre il recinto dell'ex O.P. di Napoli

The thesis analyzes a possible reintroduction scenario of the former Leonardo Bianchi Psychiatric Hospital in Naples within the urban dynamics, aiming to change the perception that we have, today, of the former asylum. Leonardo Bianchi must be recognized by the citizens for what it was in the past and what, at the same time, it can represent for the present and the future of the city, freeing itself from a condition of damnatio memoriae. With these premises and based on an urban analysis, the research has identified the potential that the complex offers and the unprecedented relations that it can establish with the surrounding context. Because of the size and the advanced deterioration in which the complex currently stands, we decided to work on a specific area, which could act as a driving force for a hypothetical future reactivation of other asylum parts. Indeed, it is utopic to think that the redevelopment process can take place through a single intervention, which involves the entire area simultaneously. It is necessary to plan the intervention one part at a time, taking advantage of the fractionated articulation of the complex, the definition of which, however, was not the subject of this thesis. The identified place, central both spatially and symbolically, includes on one side the building that originally housed the kitchen and the therapy workshops; on the other, the large open space that separates it from the reception building, consisting of the director’s garden. The project started by defining the functions that this place could host, considering the current needs of the citizens, almost like a shared hub, ready to welcome bottom-up dynamics promoted by the residents themselves. In fact, an intervention that combines a functional mix can allow citizens to relive those spaces according to unprecedented dynamics, favoring their reintegration into the urban process. At the same time, the thesis focused on the open spaces and green theme, which undoubtedly represents an enormous resource for citizens. For this reason, it was decided to work on the garden, in order to make it a park accessible to the neighborhood, a gathering space that the area does not have today. And it is precisely the mix of functions, thoughts, cultures and relations that could see Bianchi’s system as radiant as it has ever been. With the awareness that it is necessary not to forget in order not to repeat, a large part of the project focused on the definition of a museum itinerary, conceived as an immersive and sensorial experience, in which the users are led to relive the suffering and, at the same time, the hopes of the former patients. The interpretation wants to reflect on how, over the years, the way of taking care of mental health has changed and how, today, this topic is less scary than in the past. For this reason, crossing a series of dark spaces that evoke different feelings, the experience culminates in the spaces of the kitchen and, finally, of the garden, which welcome the visitor at the end of his visit, immersing him in light.

La tesi analizza un possibile scenario di reintroduzione dell’ex Ospedale Psichiatrico Leonardo Bianchi di Napoli all’interno delle dinamiche urbane, ponendosi come obiettivo quello di cambiare la percezione che si ha, ad oggi, dell’ex manicomio. Il Leonardo Bianchi deve essere riconosciuto dalla cittadinanza per quello che è stato in passato e che, contemporaneamente, può rappresentare nel presente e nel futuro della città, svincolandosi da una condizione di damnatio memoriae. Con queste premesse e sulla base di un’analisi urbana, la ricerca ha individuato le potenzialità che il complesso offre e le relazioni inedite che esso può instaurare con il contesto circostante. Data la mole e la condizione di degrado avanzato in cui verte attualmente il complesso, si è deciso di individuare un’area sulla quale intervenire, che possa fungere da forza motrice per un’ipotetica riattivazione futura del resto delle parti. È utopico pensare, infatti, che il processo di riqualificazione possa avvenire mediante un intervento unico, che coinvolga l’intera area simultaneamente. Risulta necessario programmare degli interventi secondo parti e tempi differenti, sfruttando l’articolazione frazionata del complesso, la cui definizione, tuttavia, non è stata oggetto della tesi. Il luogo individuato, centrale sia spazialmente che simbolicamente, comprende da un lato l’edificio che ospitava, originariamente, la cucina e i laboratori di ergoterapia; dall’altro il grande spazio aperto che lo separa dall’edificio di accoglienza, costituito dal giardino del direttore. Il progetto si è occupato, quindi, di definire le funzioni che questo luogo potrebbe ospitare, ponendosi al servizio degli attuali bisogni dei cittadini, quasi come un hub condiviso, pronto ad accogliere dinamiche di bottom-up promosse dai residenti stessi. Un intervento che combini una mixité funzionale può consentire, infatti, ai cittadini di rivivere quegli spazi secondo dinamiche inedite, favorendone un reinserimento nel processo urbano. Contemporaneamente, la tesi si è focalizzata sul tema degli spazi aperti e del verde, che, indubbiamente, costituiscono un’enorme risorsa per i cittadini. Per questo motivo, si è deciso di lavorare sul giardino, in modo da renderlo un parco accessibile al quartiere, uno spazio di aggregazione di cui oggi la zona è sprovvista. Ed è proprio la mescolanza di funzioni, pensieri, culture e relazioni che potrebbe vedere la macchina del Bianchi radiante come non lo è mai stata. Con la consapevolezza che sia necessario ricordare per non ripetere, gran parte del progetto si è concentrata sulla definizione di un percorso museale, concepito come un’esperienza immersiva e sensoriale, in cui i fruitori vengono portati a rivivere la sofferenza e, insieme, le speranze degli internati. La chiave di lettura vuole far riflettere su come, negli anni, sia cambiato il modo di prendersi cura della propria salute mentale e come, oggi, questo tema sia meno spaventoso che in passato. Per questo motivo, attraversando una serie di spazi bui che rievocano diversi stati d’animo, l’esperienza culmina negli spazi della cucina e, infine, del giardino, che accolgono il visitatore al termine della sua visita, immergendolo nella luce.
