What is known as Soviet Modernism gave rise to numerous buildings in Soviet cities in the last century. The evidence is still there, and the heritage of buildings constructed during that period is in danger of being lost due to transformations over time. The Museum of Applied Arts in Tashkent fits into this context, however, representing an exception. Established as a residence in the early twentieth century, the building has deep stratification, symbolizing the traces of history. However, the museum today is seemingly uniform, and its introverted nature is rediscovered in the exhibition route, thanks to its courtyard, which paradoxically remains as an ancillary feature. The old villa with its brick finish blends in with that of the two modernist wings, which were originally clad with concrete panels and were designed with a significantly lower eave height. The entrance to the museum also had different characteristics to those of today: a second story stood on the facade, closed to the street but open to the courtyard, which was later demolished due to structural problems. The goal of this thesis is to make the museum more attractive to visitors by returning it to its original characteristics and restoring the elements that made it an exception from other Soviet Modernism buildings. A further design intervention will be to expand the museum, thanks to a new wing, this time contemporary, so as to allow a better exhibition experience for the visitor, but also better organization for those working inside the museum.

Abstract
A further design intervention will be to expand the museum, thanks to a new wing, this time contemporary, so as to allow a better exhibition experience for the visitor, but also better organization for those working inside the museum.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
