Due to a business model focused on the engagement metric, some of the decisions that are made by the most popular digital platforms, such as the social media Tik Tok and Instagram, tend to ignore or even affect the digital well-being of the users who populate them. Among these choices are those concerning the design of the interfaces and, in particular, the implementation of some elements and mechanics commonly called in the scientific literature “damaging patterns” or “dark patterns”. As established by numerous researches on the matter, these elements are responsible for a negative digital experience since they are able to exploit users’ cognitive biases to make them make choices and commit with behaviors that they otherwise would not intentionally perform, ending up making them develop harmful habits. Although there are already several proposed solutions with different approaches to these problems, a point of view that has so far been scarcely taken into consideration by the scientific community concerns UI designers and their tendencies, projectual sensitivity and awareness regarding the implementation of these damaging patterns in the interfaces they design. The thesis therefore proposed to carry out a study on designers with the aim of deepening the situation from their point of view and, by working together with some of them, to understand what could be the most effective and achievable ways of transmitting current knowledge about the topic, in such a way as to make them accessible and understandable to everyone involved. The research work has shown that there is not a pronounced tendency of designers to implement damaging patterns, but rather that there is a scarcity of tools and knowledge related to the more ethical design options. The projectual output of the thesis therefore concerned the proposal of a platform that could be capable of transmitting pragmatic knowledge to designers regarding ethical design practices, as well as allowing them to compare and inspire each other by sharing their interfaces within a community.
A causa del modello di business focalizzato sulla metrica dell’engagement, alcune delle decisioni che vengono prese dalle piattaforme digitali più popolari, come i social media Tik Tok ed Instagram, tendono ad ignorare o altresì intaccare il benessere digitale degli utenti che li popolano. Tra queste scelte vi sono quelle che riguardano la progettazione delle interfacce ed in particolare l’implementazione di alcuni elementi e meccaniche comunemente chiamati in letteratura scientifica “damaging patterns” o “dark patterns”. Come assodato da numerose ricerche in merito, questi elementi sono i responsabili di un’esperienza digitale negativa poiché in grado di sfruttare i bias cognitivi degli utenti per fargli fare scelte e comportamenti che quest’ultimi altrimenti non compierebbero intenzionalmente, finendo per fargli sviluppare abitudini dannose. Nonostante esistano già diverse proposte di soluzioni con diversi approcci a queste problematiche, un punto di vista che per ora è stato scarsamente preso in considerazione dalla comunità scientifica riguarda gli UI designer e la loro tendenza, sensibilità progettuale e consapevolezza riguardanti l’implementazione di questi damaging patterns nelle interfacce che progettano. La tesi si è quindi proposta di compiere uno studio sui designer col fine di approfondire la situazione dal loro punto di vista e lavorare insieme ad alcuni di loro per comprendere quali possano essere le modalità più efficaci e facilmente realizzabili per trasmettere le conoscenze attuali riguardo al tema, in modo tale da renderle accessibili e comprensibili agli addetti ai lavori. Il lavoro di ricerca ha mostrato come non ci sia una pronunciata tendenza dei designer ad implementare damaging patterns, ma quanto piuttosto ci sia una scarsità di strumenti e conoscenze relative alle opzioni di design più etiche. L’output progettuale della tesi ha quindi riguardato l’ideazione di una piattaforma che fosse in grado di trasmettere conoscenze pragmatiche ai designer riguardo alle pratiche di design etico, oltre che permettergli di confrontarsi ed ispirarsi a vicenda condividendo le proprie interfacce all’interno di una community.
