Gli strati della città : progetto di riconfigurazione di Cuesta de la Vega a Madrid

This research and the consequent project stem from the desire to intervene on a plot located on the border of the historical centre of Madrid that is currently undervalued. The palimpsest of the plot in question is remarkably rich: it is overlooked by buildings constructed in different eras, varied in terms of language but also functional, juxtaposed with 9th century sediments, located among almost forgotten urban voids but close to very active pedestrian and vehicular flows. The contradictions are many; this is an area that is central to the fabric of the city but marginal to urban life, developed above a ten-metre height slope. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that the various elements that form the context, particularly of this place but not only, do not constitute a limitation to the project, but rather its richness. The introductory essay therefore aims to motivate the methodology that will be implemented later, through a theoretical analysis of the development of the relationship between context and building, specifically articulated in the period between the 1950s and 1970s, with the related reflections of the 1980s up to the beginning of the new millennium. The starting point is the crisis of the theoretical instances of the Modern Movement, in particular the functionalist side, and the consequent Italian reflection on the city, which changed the way of thinking about architecture, renewing the attention towards the relationship between architectural design and history, in a very articulated range of positions, and towards the relationship between design and place, interpreting its stratifications and different scales. These assumptions are the solid basis on which the project in this thesis has been developed, a hybrid building, between co-housing and spaces dedicated to sharing and learning, in front of a public courtyard which, in addition to welcoming its residents, opens up to the city, positioning itself as a new place to be.

Questa ricerca e il conseguente progetto nascono dalla volontà di intervenire su un isolato collocato al confine del centro storico di Madrid attualmente poco valorizzato. Il palinsesto del lotto in questione è notevolmente ricco: su esso si affacciano edifici costruiti in epoche diverse, vari dal punto di vista del linguaggio ma anche funzionale, accostati più o meno sapientemente a sedimenti del IX secolo, situato tra vuoti urbani quasi dimenticati ma vicino a flussi pedonali e veicolari molto attivi. Le contraddizioni sono molte; si tratta di un’area centrale rispetto al tessuto della città ma marginale rispetto alla vita urbana, sviluppatosi a cavallo di un dislivello di dieci metri. L’obiettivo di questa tesi è dimostrare che i vari elementi che formano il contesto, in particolare di questo luogo ma non solo, non costituiscono un limite al progetto, bensì la sua ricchezza. Il saggio introduttivo si propone quindi di motivare la metodologia che verrà attualizzata in seguito, attraverso un’analisi teorica circa lo sviluppo del rapporto tra contesto ed edificio, articolatosi specificatamente nel periodo compreso tra gli anni Cinquanta e Settanta, con le relative riflessioni degli anni Ottanta fino all’inizio del nuovo millennio. Il punto di partenza è la crisi delle istanze teoriche del Movimento Moderno, in particolare del versante funzionalista, e la conseguente riflessione italiana sulla città, che cambiò il modo di pensare l’architettura, rinnovando l’attenzione nei confronti del rapporto tra progetto di architettura e storia, in un ventaglio molto articolato di posizioni, e del rapporto tra progetto e luogo, interpretandone le stratificazioni e le differenti scale. Questi presupposti sono la solida base sulla quale si è sviluppato il progetto in questa tesi, un edificio ibrido, tra co-housing sociale e spazi dedicati alla condivisione e all’apprendimento, antistante ad una corte pubblica che, oltre ad accogliere i propri residenti, si apre alla città ponendosi come nuovo luogo dello stare.
