Layer height has the main influence on the best density and hardness values, and it can reduce the influence that other parameters have on the quality. Moreover, the study suggests to also consider the contributions of other process parameters and environmental conditions, since they could be source of noise, therefore a full factorial experimental design is recommended to clarify the results.

Abstract
Metal Binder Jetting (MBJ) has potential to be a disruptive technology on the additive manufacturing field to produce large quantities of high-quality industrial components. MBJ consists in the deposition of a liquid binder layer-by-layer on a powder bed to obtain complex geometries. After printing, it is required post-processing techniques of curing to obtain sufficient strength of the green parts for de-powdering phase, then debinding which burns out polymeric binder and sintering to achieve the desired densification and mechanical properties of the final parts. To ensure a quality robustness, it is required to control several variables throughout the process chain. Therefore, it is fundamental to study the most influential factors for the adoption of new generation MBJ systems by the manufacturing community. It was performed an experimental assessment of a MBJ shop system (Desktop Metal) on the effects that powder pre-processing and printing parameters have on the quality of 17-4PH parts. The fractioned experimental campaign varied among two levels, the temperature of the powder, the relative humidity of the printing chamber, the layer height (thickness), and the bleeding factor. The focus is on surface roughness, dimensional accuracy and linear shrinkage using a 3D microscope scanner (Alicona InifiniteFocus), density by archimedes’ method and internal density by analyzing the metallography of the specimens, and superficial hardness (Rockwell C) and internal microhardness (HV 0,3 kgf). Layer height has the main influence on the best density and hardness values, and it can reduce the influence that other parameters have on the quality. Moreover, the study suggests to also consider the contributions of other process parameters and environmental conditions, since they could be source of noise, therefore a full factorial experimental design is recommended to clarify the results.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
