Dare to think, dare to act. A critical reflection on the modernization paradox : the competitions for the palace of the Soviets (1931-1933) and the CCTV headquarters (2002)

The thesis aims to illustrate the complexity of national architectural competitions and how they act as promoters of political power by comparing two extremely crucial (international) architectural competitions (the Palace of the Soviets and the CCTV Headquarters) held in two socialist countries (the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China). The thesis will address the basic components of each competition, such as the brief, site selection, and jury members, as well as the final winning schemes with other representative entries. As research on the competition for the Palace of the Soviets already has a well-established theoretical framework, the thesis will build on the framework of this competition and introduce the methodology to the research on the competition for the CCTV Headquarters, combined with newly disclosed archives and interviews with related people. After the research into the competition for the CCTV Headquarters, the results show that the selection of the final scheme came not only from the symbolic need alone but also from the interaction and promotion of the different parts within the competition. Ultimately, the choice reflects the government's understanding of modernization and the balance of complexity in the competition. Through a detailed examination of the schemes between OMA and Toyo Ito & Yung Ho Chang in the competition for the CCTV Headquarters, the results show some of the modernization paradoxes of China at the time as presented by the choices between them. The thesis tries to refine a theoretical framework that can guide future research on such national architectural competitions. By examining the components of the competition and the different entries, a fuller understanding of the reasons why the final winning scheme was selected and the complexity of the considerations behind the decision can be presented.

La tesi si propone di illustrare la complessità dei concorsi nazionali di architettura e il modo in cui agiscono come promotori del potere politico, confrontando due concorsi di architettura (internazionali) estremamente cruciali (il Palazzo dei Soviet e la sede della CCTV) svoltisi in due Paesi socialisti (l'Unione Sovietica e la Repubblica Popolare Cinese). La tesi affronterà le componenti di base di ciascun concorso, come il bando, la selezione del sito e i membri della giuria, nonché gli schemi finali vincenti con altri progetti rappresentativi. Poiché la ricerca sul concorso per il Palazzo dei Soviet ha già un quadro teorico consolidato, la tesi si baserà sul quadro di questo concorso e introdurrà la metodologia per la ricerca sul concorso per la sede della CCTV, combinata con archivi recentemente divulgati e interviste con persone collegate. Dopo la ricerca sul concorso per la sede centrale della CCTV, i risultati mostrano che la selezione dello schema finale non è derivata solo dall'esigenza simbolica, ma anche dall'interazione e dalla promozione delle diverse parti all'interno del concorso. In definitiva, la scelta riflette la comprensione della modernizzazione da parte del governo e l'equilibrio della complessità del concorso. Attraverso un esame dettagliato degli schemi tra OMA e Toyo Ito & Yung Ho Chang nel concorso per la sede della CCTV, i risultati mostrano alcuni dei paradossi della modernizzazione della Cina dell'epoca, presentati dalle scelte tra i due. La tesi cerca di affinare un quadro teorico che possa guidare le future ricerche su questi concorsi nazionali di architettura. Esaminando le componenti del concorso e le diverse proposte, è possibile presentare una comprensione più completa delle ragioni per cui è stato selezionato il progetto vincitore finale e della complessità delle considerazioni alla base della decisione.
