In the recent years, there has been growing the interest regarding the introduction of regenerative braking recuperation capability to the traditional DC railway traction substations, which only perform AC to DC conversion, thus they cannot reverse the power flow. They also show further disadvantages, mainly concerning harmonic content at power supply level, reactive power consumption, voltage regulation capability and ripple at the DC side. In this study it is developed the modelling and simulation of a new reversible substation design for the Italian 3 kV DC railway system, conducted through the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment, and tested within different load scenarios and system configurations. To this end, the principal features of the traditional and modern substations are studied in detail, along with an updated version of the state-of-art of the force-commutated technologies and the industry proposed reversible substations. Then, it are compared two different substations typologies, which differ among them in the quantity of converters and control system, but share the same working principles and general appliances. After that, the model with the best performances is tested through additional simulations, concerning interleaving strategies, phase-shift transformers, passive filtering and bilateral power supply. The most important indicators are analysed and compared, in order to find the best yields in terms of voltage ripple, passive components stresses, total harmonic distortion, voltage and current unbalances, and unity power factor operation.

Abstract
The most important indicators are analysed and compared, in order to find the best yields in terms of voltage ripple, passive components stresses, total harmonic distortion, voltage and current unbalances, and unity power factor operation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
