Anthropization heavily changed natural cultural landscape features all over the world, influencing climate change. Such processes have also hit mountain territories, where, due to their peculiar social e geomorphological condition, these effects have been greater than in other territories. Our traditional perception of the Alps is based on the image of the mountains as solid, static, rigid monoliths, and resistant mass that acts mainly as a barrier, but, it is a dynamic and sensitive organism that changes over time and becomes strongly influenced by changing climate conditions. Alpine bridge, connecting Central Europe, at the same time provides the most diverse biota of varied microclimates and altitudinal ecological conditions. Considering northern Italy, the rise in annual temperatures is expected to continue with expected warming of 1-2°C above the average established between 1980 and 2010 by 2035. According to the pessimistic emissions scenario, the number of ice days per year in the high mountains of the European Alps may decrease by more than a month by 2050 and up to two months by the end of the century. The consequences of changes in temperature and precipitation are already clearly visible in the mountains: glaciers are retreating (15-20% decrease in the number of ice days), snow bridges are disappearing, and landscape is migrating upwards to find suitable temperatures. Permafrost degradation causes landslides which means deteriorated infrastructure. Main economy reliance activities of this area like pasturing, tourism, and agriculture are also affected. In short climate changes and migrating landscapes threaten to alter the future landscape image and economic reliance of the Alps. The shifting of nature and tree lines shift due to climate change can pose several problems involving the desynchronization of flora and fauna. In terms of biotic factors, flora, and fauna will move to higher elevations (30-100m per decade) to find favorable climatic conditions. Combined with fragmented green infrastructure, glacier retreat, and snowfield melt, these changes will cause mountain landscapes to undergo profound transformations, with vegetated and rocky environments being found at higher and higher elevations. Some emblematic species (both common and rare) will see the extent of their habitat decrease or even disappear, causing further changes to the landscape. All these scenarios put forward a major question: WHAT WILL BE THE FUTURE LANDSCAPE IMAGE OF THE ALPS? So, the main aim of the thesis will be to find sustainable strategies to improve the urban biodiversity, ecological connectivity, and landscape development of the Alps by addressing large-scale strategies and then on the small-scale focusing on drawing closer to the identity of the mountains, analyzing complexity, and envision future challenges in case of the Italian region Trentino Alto Adige. It is considered one of the important biodiversity hotspots in Italy and 30% of Trentino is devoted to the safeguarding and conservation of nature, ninety-nine percent of the Dolomites fall under a protected area, but still, climate changes are affecting the main economic pillars of this area, which affects the overall natural capital.
