Co-Exist(in) Nature : introducing an architectural organism for cohabitation in Olivelo Living Park, Izmir

Co-Exist(in) Nature is a design-driven speculation on the establishment of a balanced relationship between built and natural, urban and rural contexts. In the framework of ongoing broader initiatives on re-identifying the greenbelt of the city of Izmir, the project departs from a cohesive study of the spatial, morphological and ecological qualities of the surrounding context from macro to micro scales. The Olivelo Living Park natural reserve is selected as the project site: an area of 57 hectares characterized by a rich and diverse flora and fauna. The project sets out to introduce new ways to experience, inhabit and valorize the landscape through ecologically responsible architectural design solutions which interpret the regional vernacular language. It introduces three new poles for human activities in a place where nature manifests itself in its purest forms. The Unveiled Harmony, the Olivillage and the Forest Retreat comprise the Co-Exist (in) Nature architectural system, in the pursuit of creating an architectural organism for observation, communal cultural activities and dwelling. Three main macro themes arise from the simultaneous study with theoretical and design case studies, from the broader architectural discourse which shapes and supports the design strategies. The project puts forward a vision for a new context of cohabitation between nature and man, landscape and artifice in the studied area. It adopts a neo-vernacular design approach, considering the inherent principles of the area and envisioning its future possible development and growth.

Co-Exist(in) Nature è una speculazione progettuale sulla creazione di un rapporto equilibrato tra costruito e naturale, urbano e rurale. Nel quadro delle più ampie iniziative in corso sulla reidentificazione della cintura verde della città di Izmir, il progetto parte da uno studio coerente delle qualità spaziali, morfologiche ed ecologiche del contesto circostante dalla macro alla micro scala. Come sede del progetto viene scelta la riserva naturale del Parco Vivente dell’Olivelo: un’area di 57 ettari caratterizzata da una flora e una fauna ricche e diversificate. Il progetto si propone di introdurre nuovi modi di vivere, abitare e valorizzare il paesaggio attraverso soluzioni progettuali architettoniche ecologicamente responsabili che interpretano il linguaggio vernacolare regionale. Introduce tre nuovi poli per le attività umane in un luogo dove la natura si manifesta nelle sue forme più pure. The Unveiled Harmony, the Olivillage e the Forest Retreat costituiscono il sistema architettonico Co-Exist (in)Nature, nel tentativo di creare un organismo architettonico per l’osservazione, le attività culturali comuni e l’abitazione. Dallo studio simultaneo con casi studio teorici e progettuali, dal discorso architettonico più ampio che plasma e supporta le strategie progettuali, nascono tre macro temi principali. Il progetto propone una visione per un nuovo contesto di convivenza tra natura e uomo, paesaggio e artificio nell’area studiata. Adotta un approccio progettuale neo-vernacolare, considerando i principi intrinseci dell’area e immaginando il suo futuro possibile sviluppo e crescita.
