The Artemio Franchi Stadium, home of AC Fiorentina since 1931, is the project that threw the until then unknown Pier Luigi Nervi (1891-1979) to the headlines, actually inaugurating a prolific forty-year career. Despite the universally recognized artistic, engineering and documentary value, today it has to face the growing specificity and the mandatoriness of the requirements, which impose an adaptation which may give Florence and Fiorentina a modern complex, suitable to the contemporary needs. The issue has been the subject of many conflicts and debates for years, with the various involved actors who, despite the alternating attempts to reopen the discussion, still cannot find a common agreement, further complicated by the monumental constraint in force on the building. The redevelopment of the complex is faced with a comprehensive approach, which keeps into consideration multiple aspects of various nature. Aiming to reject any a priori and self-referential solution, the intervention lays its foundations on analysis of the existing situation as much accurate as possible, of the modern needs suggested by remarkable contemporary examples, of the historical specificity of the Franchi Stadium, and of Pier Luigi Nervi’s particularity, artistry and innovation, which find their synthesis in the final proposal. The intervention, as defined along the process, lays its foundations on the actualization of Pier Luigi Nervi’s work, declining, with the modern technique potentials, the revolutions implemented, or just imagined, by the brilliant engineer, and synthesizing the main characters in a respectful and compatible way. In order to differentiate itself from the previous ones, the proposal wonders on the effective need for conservation, which appears unnatural when taken as given and for its own sake, promoting instead an integrated conservation approach, also supported by the infrastructural nature of the building. In this approach, the New Franchi Stadium moves away from the illusion of less intervention, already precluded by the integrations imposed by the adaptation and required by the plans, allowing the designers to contribute to the affirmation of the will of their time, without giving up their own architectural vision.

Abstract
In this approach, the New Franchi Stadium moves away from the illusion of less intervention, already precluded by the integrations imposed by the adaptation and required by the plans, allowing the designers to contribute to the affirmation of the will of their time, without giving up their own architectural vision.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
