Docklands: progetto di ampliamento per il Porto di Lisbona

In October 2021, 145 million euros were allocated by the Portuguese government for the expansion of the Alcantara container terminal. In March 2022, the Alcantara Maritime Stations were included among the World Monuments Fund's works to be preserved. The subject of this thesis arises from this conflict: on the one hand the expansion of the Port of Lisbon and on the other the expansion of the city and the protection of its history. As so often in the real world, economics wins out over everything else, and in this case too, the expansion of the Port of Lisbon, which will take place over the next few years, will encompass part of the city, without a vision of what could be one of the last unplanned places in the city itself. A middle ground between the railway and the Tejo river, it becomes the battleground where a Container Terminal and a watchtower coexist. A public park and a commercial port. Function and form shape each other, yielding and regaining ground like trench warfare. The aim and result is to construct an idea and defend it, in the conviction that architecture must be a political act that concerns everyone.

Nell’ottobre 2021, 145 Milioni di euro sono stati stanziati dal governo portoghese per l’ampliamento del terminal container di Alcantara. Nel Marzo 2022 le Stazioni marittime di Alcantara sono state inserite tra le opere da preservare del World Monuments Fund. L’oggetto di questa tesi nasce da questo confilitto: da un lato l’espansione del Porto di Lisbona dall’altra l’espansione della città e la tutela della sua storia. Come tante volte nel mondo reale, l’economia vince su tutto il resto e anche in questo caso l’espansione del Porto di Lisbona, che si concretizzerà nei prossimi anni, ingloberà parte della città, senza una visione su quello che potrebbe essere uno degli ultimi luoghi non pianificati della città stessa. Una terra di mezzo tra la ferrovia e il fiume Tejo, diventa il campo di battaglia dove far coesistere un Terminal per Container e una torre di avvistamento. Un parco pubblico e un porto commerciale. Funzione e forma si plasmano l’uno sull’altro, cedendo e riacquistando terreno come una guerra di trincea. L’obiettivo e il risultato è costruire un’idea e difenderla, nella convinzione che l’architettura debba essere un atto politico che riguarda tutti.
