Re-design the void. A new simultaneous landscape

The concept of emptiness and the theme of quarrying in the landscape are two inseparable elements that could not exist one without the other, and the redevelopment of these places, which have been exploited for years and have always been seen as “wounds” in the landscape, has become increasingly popular in the late 1990s. They represent evocative places, the results of the passage of time in which the presence of man has left its traces. Traces that should not be erased, but rather emphasized and reinterpreted so as to keep the memory of the place and its identity alive. In this sense, having become aware of the irreversibility of the place, the project proposes a new vision for the Cava dell’Isola, both on a landscape and architectural level, in which the element of the void and the extracting activity are seen as project opportunities in a “simultaneous landscape” solution. In fact, the project presents itself as a challenge to a landscape in continuous transformation, as the extraction will continue for several more years. The objective is to transform this partly abandoned landscape into a new place of interest that once again enhances the quarry itself and its identity through more conscious tourism and scientific research in the field. In this perspective, the quarry is no longer seen as a void to be filled but as an object of architectural reflection that generates new spaces and relationships. This work, organized through four main moments, is presented as a journey of rediscovery and study of quarry landscapes through the fundamental concepts of void and matter in architecture. It is also a study of the methods of regeneration of these places and the use of concrete as a sustainable material that integrates with the place, emphasizing its characteristics. Finally, the presentation of the quarry museum and geological research centre project in the Cava dell’Isola, from an analysis of the context to a description of the construction techniques.

Il concetto di vuoto e il tema del paesaggio cavato sono due elementi inscindibili che non potrebbero esistere l’uno senza l’altro, e la riqualificazione di questi luoghi, che sono stati sfruttati per anni e sono sempre stati visti come “ferite” del paesaggio, ha preso sempre più piede alla fine degli anni Novanta. Essi rappresentano luoghi evocativi, risultati di un trascorrere del tempo in cui la presenza dell’uomo ha lasciato le sue tracce. Tracce che non vanno cancellate, ma bensì sottolineate e reinterpretate in modo da mantenere viva la memoria del luogo e la sua identità. In questo senso, presa consapevolezza dell’irreversibilità del luogo, l’elaborato propone una nuova visione per la Cava dell’Isola, sia a livello paesaggistico che a livello architettonico, nel quale l’elemento del vuoto e l’attività estrattiva sono visti come opportunità di progetto in una soluzione di “paesaggio simultaneo”. Il progetto infatti si pone come sfida nei confronti di un paesaggio in continua trasformazione, in quanto l’attività estrattiva procederà ancora per diversi anni. L’obiettivo è quello di trasformare questo paesaggio in parte abbandonato in un nuovo luogo di interesse che valorizzi nuovamente la cava stessa e la sua identità attraverso un turismo più consapevole e la ricerca scientifica sul campo. In questa prospettiva la cava non è più vista come un vuoto da colmare ma come oggetto di riflessione architettonica che genera nuovi spazi e relazioni. Tale elaborato, organizzato attraverso quattro momenti principali, si presenta come un viaggio di riscoperta e studio dei paesaggi cavati attraverso i concetti fondamentali di vuoto e di materia in architettura. Uno studio inoltre sulle metodologie di rigenerazione di questi luoghi e dell’utilizzo del calcestruzzo come materiale sostenibile che si integra con il luogo enfatizzandone le caratteristiche. Infine, la presentazione del progetto del museo della cava e centro di ricerca geologico nella Cava dell’Isola, da un analisi del contesto fino alla descrizione delle tecniche costruttive.
